I am interested in the meaning this word 'fascist' which apparently is applied to right wing people we don't like. In another thread the NF was decribed as fascist; the BNP is descibed as fascist.

I think I am clear about the fascist movements and countries of the mid 20th century. They opposed the socialist and communists and yet aimed to control society as the socialists and communists did.

In the 21st century the BNP doesn't like non-white people and foreign white people and yet it is in essence a socialist party and therefore left wing.

The NF are nationalistic to a fault, yet Soviet Russia was nationalistic, except it hid behind the lie of being international in outlook.

The more I think about it the more muddled I get.

Broadly it means a totalitarian regime, even on the left wing. The Nazi party were National Socialists, and were fascist.

I used the term about the NF not because I dislike the fascist scum, but because they are fascist scum. The BNP are also fascist scum.

The Italians gave us the word and in its traditional sense the Italians, Germans and Spaniards (among others) defined it in the middle of the last century.

I remember from 'The Young Ones' the word was used as a riposte to anyone in authority that you (or Rik) didn't like.

I am coming to the conclusion that it is now an emotive word.

Fascism is not right-wing. Right-wing ideologies believe in free market economies. Facists believe in private supply but public control of economy. In other words a highly regulated private economy. Fascists would be highly supportive of the "economic meltdown" inspired stimulus packages. They want to command the economy but not run it.

Nationalism is core to the fascist ideology. I'd say that nationalism is what causes the belief in economic command (free markets with incentives that "promote" the national interest").

I'd say a lot of new labour movements around the world are quite fascist. Not extremely so, but noticeably so. The Labor Party in Australia wants to increase regulation and give handouts to "key national industries" while at the same time controlling people's lives and making them "do the right thing" by introducing filtered internet and increasing taxes on alcohol.

I see fascism as any group that is racist either racially or ideologically. In other words intolerant of anyone who does not conform to their centrist idea of what they may think of as ideal.

I think the criteria for a definition suggested so far is far too narrow.

Am I making any sense or am I being too all inclusive LOL?

I wonder of it was ever not an emotive word. Its meaning will evolve beyond the initial definition, but the definition of it being folk one dislikes is incorrect. I dislike many groups of people, but only the fascists deserve the label.

Does that then make the F word to mean the inverse of 'that's so gay'? (Where I am considering 'that's so gay' to be positive and beautiful statement! Thus making the F word being the reality of a 'sin that dare not speak it's name')
I'm sure I have used it that way and will probably continue doing so.

I would also say that the Spaniards appointed themselves to be that during the inquisition and their conquest and rape of the Americas.
