Nuts. Not to compare or anything, but I was once asked to change the main character of a very long story from 16 to 18. The story revolved around his getting a license and car, but I was still asked to change his age. Guess I should have moved the story to a country where you must be 18 to drive?
Must be even stranger when they want the sexuality of a character changed in an actual novel.
