I must admit that I thought it was, at least at first, but there are far better sources of inspiration than this thread. Tumblr is one such. Despite a reputation there for nuking blogs, experimentation there shows that clean, non sexualised pictures, stay online, mostly. It is better designed for this.

I was prompted into this by some comments received, but they align with my own thoughts as well. I started it to give folk something to inspire them to write stories. And it has definitely inspired some of them.

By taking the unilateral decision to remove this thread I am aware that some of you will be angry. However, I have also been made aware that it prevents some authors from actually submitting material here.

Things change. It has had a good run, but it is now a simple part of the site's history.

I am fully aware of the irony, and that I have just "done a Tumblr" on my own forum!

As you know, I was always a bit uneasy about that thread, and it was the major reason that I didn't feel able to challenge WiFi providers who banned it (annoyingly, including Great Western Railway) as "adult content - pornography". I hope also that youngsters will now feel a bit more able to use this forum - I think some will have found the "Inspiration" thread (which was always in the top three most recent, so highly visible) off-putting.

I do hope that this will not stop challenges based around particular pictures. I've always enjoyed reading the stories, and seeing what very different lines of thought they inspire in the authors.

Challenges surrounding a picture are a very different thing. They provide a correct spur

I think I solved many of the WiFi providers' objections when I corrected the site's trusted status with one blocking agency. The current listing is probably the best sites like this can achieve. Other agencies copy this one, as far as I can work out

Those who would like the pictures have only to venture to Tumblr, which was the source for over 99% of them

The trouble with many of the pictures on that thread is that the pictures were taken in all innonence and viewed by people whose intent was less than innocent.

I think the problem with this thread is that ther are many pictures taken of young boys in all innocence being viewed by those whose interest was less than innocent.

Would you or somebody else be able to create a thread or something with links to other sites or pages with the same kind of pictures for writing?

It's pretty easy to find places where pictures of beautiful young men are posted. a search that includes the word Tumblr togethewr wioth cute boys, beautiful boys, etc will reveal many blogs.  You probably have to join Tumblr in order to reveal them when you click a link

I see no reason as to why "legal" images can't be posted in websites for the presusal and enjoyment of members.

It is appropriate that Tumblr be identified as being unsympathetic but it is best to move on.

The real debate should be around why Timmy will not allow a similiar collection of legal images to be stored on THIS site.

cheers

The problem is not censorship.

The problem is copyright.

fair enough.

However, my response is that as each image would be taken from public sources then they would fall in the public domain and thus would be able to be repeated in this forum.

Each of the images I would be sharing come from public sources. Has this forum ever received a DMCA notice regarding pictorial content ?

I would add that pleasure was obtained from the combined resources of the many willing members of this forum. That resource and that pleasure has now been lost.

Please allow the members to post images appropriate to the aims of this forum.

cheers

Many sources are public, and many of those sources contain work that is not licenced to be there, or is not licenced for onward transmission.

Any creator of artistic material is rightly aggrieved when folk ride roughshod over their rights. Whether or not the site has received a DMCA notice in the past is not of any importance. My intention is not to recieve one in the future.

That thread is gone. It is not going to return, nor is any similar thread going to return.

An image that breaches copyright is not a legal image to display. There is no debate. You may have a discussion if you wish, but I think that ship sailed some time ago.

Public domain is relevant here

The term "Public Domain" cannot be defined by us. The fact that we see a photograph publicly displayed does not mean that display grants us free license to use it without credit and permission just because we want to.

The copyright laws are there for a reason. I applaud those who follow them. Why? Because I and every author here has a stake, minor or major though it may be. The storys we write that are displayed here publicly are our intellectual property just as the photographs displayed elsewhere are someone else's property. Using them without permission and credit is a violation of ownership. That's the way it is and the way it should be.

Those who wish to post any pictures they find lying around, they need to get their own web site. Those pictures are not coming here. They also need to read the terms and conditions of the hostinng organisation about items that breach copyright. Usually they are required to indemnify the provider against leagl action by others from breaking the laws of copyright and other laws. That comes with a large price tag.

Do I really need to put a huge banner here saying the same thing?

I guess I can make a terms and conditions section that folk have to agree to each time they log in, but, seriously, just don't do it.

Read the copyright statement at the foot of every goddam page of the forum and the site. Do I need to enhance it in some way?

If I end up having to do serious work to remove material that falls foul of my arbitrary and benign dictatorship here for thsi site which is a hobby then I will consider that the poster has opted to leave the forum and I will take steps to implement their decision. There is no court of appeal.

Teddy is right.

Timmy, just a couple of quick questions here on this.

What happens if someone finds a picture that they'd like to propose for a future Writing Challenge (assuming that its use, like those photos that have already been used in past Writing Challenges, would not be problematic)?  Would we still be allowed to show it to you in a private setting (such as sending it to you via e-mail, rather than posting it here for all to see), or is it a "Thanks for the thought, but honestly, don't bother" type of situation?

And if you're no longer accepting outside submissions for consideration for Writing Challenge pictures, will you be looking for future pictures yourself, or will you be discontinuing the Writing Challenges (or at least ones involving pictures) once you've used up the current supply of pictures that you've set aside for that purpose (I've noticed on the main page that the next listed challege, after the "Light and Shade" challenge, is indicated as being another picture competetion)?

I have a reasonable library of potential challenge pictures. I am certain that the doctrine of Fair Use applies to them, whereas a simple post here would not fall under it.

Email me any picture that is safe for work and that you believe worthy of consideration. I will add it to my library. I pick new pictures selfishly, but which I mean for my own amusement!

I have been preoccupied this week. My wife was hospitalised with a nasty bacterial pneumonia, and it was hard togetthe current challenge out of the door. She is home, discharged this evening, but not fit by any means

I had brochitis a few years ago, and while it didn't require hospitalization it did lay me up for a while (to the point that I had to call in sick to work, for the first and so far only time in my entire adult working life), so I can empathize.  Certainly taking care of her and helping her to get better takes a far higher priority than anything around here.
