Yesterday, for the first time in years, I checked out Friends Reunited.
I　had a varied school career, starting at prep school, moving to public school before switching to the state sector in the form of a liberal grammar school. There was an announcement, the likes of which I had never seen before. In the grammar school entry there was a celebration of two sixth formers who had publicly come out to their class mates as a gay couple.
It is a great thing that the two boys had the courage to do this so publicly. I wonder how the school reacted to such an announcement? It was always liberal school so I am assuming that the school either chose to ignore the annoucement or else did nothing to discourage it.
It would never have happened in my day, I hope they are happy.

At my next school, a former grammar school turned comprehensive (yes I did get through schools the way most people get through socks) we had a reunion at which two former pupils stated they were gay. Neither attracted me at the time alas, my interests were elswhere! However, people were very relaxed about them coming out and felt happy for them. It has to be reported that both had stereotypical 'gay' careers. So some things never change. That reminds me of CJ's line in 'The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin': "Why don't you try hairdressing? There are plenty of opportunities for the gifted homosexual".
