"In the summer of 1970, just before Kirk’s fifth birthday, his parents learned about a new federally funded research program at UCLA for young boys who were showing early signs of being effeminate. Concerned that Kirk was exhibiting some of the behaviors listed by a UCLA researcher on a local television talk show, Kirk’s parents decided to take him in for an evaluation and treatment. Ten months later, Kirk’s therapy was judged a success and his parents were reassured he would now grow up to be a normal, heterosexual man.

When Kirk was undergoing treatment at UCLA, he was under the care of a young grad student by the name of George Rekers. In 1974, Rekers and his mentor, Dr. Ivar Lovaas, published a landmark paper describing “Kraig’s” treatment — “Kraig” being their pseudonym for Kirk. That paper, which appeared in the Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, was “the first experimental study on the subject of childhood cross-gender problems.” That paper launched Rekers’s career, first as an expert in childhood sexual development, and later as an anti-gay activist.

Kirk survived his ordeal, and he continued to grow up under relative anonymity. Neither he nor his family knew that he was the subject of nearly two decades of discussion among behavioral therapists working to change their clients’ sexual orientation. Through it all, Rekers wrote that Kirk had a “normal male identity, had normal aspirations for growing up to be married and have a family, and was well-adjusted as a teen-age boy in general.” The truth was far different. His suicide attempt at the age of seventeen was unsuccessful. But twenty years later, he took his life on December 21, 2003. He was 38."

the day will come when people like those doctors realise their mistake... karma works infallibly... I am just concerned about what is going to happen to their "different" kids... torture and death? and now that Rick S., the 2012 president candidate... had he said something like that in Norway, he would have been out of politics before he could say Quidditch... omg, those bigot catholics...

I graduated from UCLA and have heard of this professor. The psychology has a couple other contraversial professors on their roster and they have as many fans as detractors. UCLA would argue for academic freedom and not want to censor any professor's research. This news though is bullying, plain and simple. The parents too ought to be charged as accomplices to his suicide.

... programme has taken up this story and in a three part serial (which finished airing last evening) examines much of what has been reported through the original Box Turtle report.

What I find most interesting, and begs the larger question of "Why are we only just now learning about this travesty?", is why are these Gender and/or Behavioural Re-alignment programmes, studies, and facilities being tolerated at all; and further why are they not being put out of business, and the principles in each charge with at the very least of it, aggravated assault.

In an earlier thread here I asked the question "Is any of this true?", this being in response to an article I had read earlier that day at the milkboys.org web-site which detailed a similar injustice having been inflicted this time upon a female. Further, I had indicated that a review of the reddit.com web-site (which hosts documentation cataloguing a wide variety of other shameful behaviours, notably involving troubled teens at the link http://www.reddit.com/troubledteens/) was warranted and deserving of our attention.

So how do we point Anderson Cooper's nose in the direction of this web-site and its' inventory of abusive behaviours affecting our children which appear to be largely ignored by those with the power to stop them?

I think that this is an issue whose time has finally come, and it is beholden upon all of us to force the media to be proactive and responsible in reporting what is going down within (and behind) these facilities and apparently has been for half-a-dozen-decades if not longer.

some parents want to change their kids, some are happy with them the way they are.

this video from 1991:
"I performed to MADONNA's "VOGUE" in the Summer of 1991 when my parents took me to Hampton Beach Casino in Hampton Beach, New Hampshire. A business in the casino at the time gave tourists the chance to lip-synch to their favorite pop songs in front of a blue screen background, and I was lucky enough to partake that summer."

not really me....that last line comes with the video
