Age of consent in America has always been tied to the moral expectations of religious folks, wrong as they are.

I blame the English...yes you guys did it to us! All those Puritans arrived on our shores, kicked out because your kings objected to their view of God and we have been suffering ever since. Thanks for nothing. Of course they had to go, wasn't it King Charles that fancied the boys? Maybe it was all those fancy wigs and lacey shirts LOL

So in most American states the age of consent is 18 for boys and 16 for girls. I guess some of our politicians fancied a little young pu**y, how convenient for them. Of course last I heard there is a law in the Carolinas available for men who have sex with girls as young as 12. They can avoid statutory rape charges if they marry the girl.

I object to anyone having a law that specifies homosexual behavior as a critera for age of consent. It discriminates and I find that absurd. But then most laws that deal with gay men are just that, seems you Brits didn't get rid of all your Puritans. Tough luck. ;-D

Age appears to be best in four things; old wood best to burn, old wine to drink, old friends to trust, and old authors to read. (Sir Francis Bacon 1561-1626)

I suppose, ChrisJames, that actually your trouble, as a descendant of the Puritans (who we threw out because we couldn't stand them either!) is simply your refusal to maintain their values. It was James I & VI who fancied boys - Charles was straight.

I am continually amazed by the extent religious belief permeates our society because it seems to me so obvious that there is no god and that the whole structure is evidence of the gullibility of people.

I am grateful that I wasn't brainwashed as a child into believing it all.

Love,
Anthony

Whilst, on the one hand, I certainly wouldn't agree with Mr. Lewis' blanket assertion that lowering the age-of-consent for Gay-related Sexual Conduct should never have been considered and has definitively contributed to the likelihood of putting these youth unnecessarily at risk; on the other, I do agree that there is an implied, and considerably significant, risk to such activity and behaviour amongst today's youth in general, and amongst "Gay Youth" in particular.

HIV/AIDS is again on the rise; most notably within the age-12 through age-21 demographic both heterosexual and homosexual (according to the most recent numbers I've seen reported in the media originating from the Centre for Disease Control in Atlanta); fueled largely I suspect because of a false understanding that the crisis has passed and that HIV/AIDS is now controllable, and no long seen as a death sentence amongst the youngest segment of our society; this in turn has prompted a rise in risky behaviours and unprotected sexual conduct which in turn are contributing to rising incidence of HIV/AIDS. A vicious circle really; one that will continue to prevail until, and perhaps for some time afterwords, the forthcoming vaccine for HIV/AIDS becomes widely available, and a reality not just some wishful pipe-dream.

Should Mr. Lewis suffer drastic action like sacking for sharing his views; I think not. However misguided they may be, and are, they are simply still just his opinion; an opinion that should be widely countered with the wealth of available evidence to the contrary and refuted, especially within the domain of his constituency when he comes up for re-election.
