I probably should keep my big mouth shut - but i'm not going to! As timmy said, everyone here earns or loses respect every time they post. I have huge respect for cossie and for Brian too - if he's an example of a spoiled kid, then they should all be spoiled.

The "Irregardless Cafe"? Sounds like a real pedant-magnet!
That reminds me of a story in "Eats, Shoots & Leaves" by Lynne Truss -- a hysterically funny grammar book; I heartily recommend it to all pedants and proto-pedants -- about a bookseller who deliberately misplaced an apostrophe in the sign outside his shop (so that it read "Smiths Book's" or something similar) so that when outraged passers-by came in, foaming at the mouth, to complain, he could calm them down and sell them a book instead.
I have the book before me but I couldn't find the precise quote, so you'll have to do with my memory. Which is about as useful as a hovercraft full of eels, I am the first to admit.
P.S. Just in case you don't know why I brought the subject up, "irregardless" is not a real word. It is often used incorrectly when people mean "regardless"; or deliberately to annoy people (as, presumably, in this case). Right, Cossie and JFR?

I must admit that the word is unknown to me. Presumably it is an example of modern "Inglish as she is spoke". I think that would be all right, provided that a proper BBC accent was being intoned. Or maybe the BBC doesn't have an accent any more. In which case it would have to be "the Queen's English". On second thoughts I think "irregardless" would be more pleasant to listen to than the Queen's English.
I think I would prefer to sit this one out until William is Queen. Wouldn't it be lovely if he were? He is sooooo mmmmm queen-like. Quite one of ours. How do you spell "lese majeste" in French?
The paradox has often been noted that the United States, founded in secularism, is now the most religiose country in Christendom, while England, with an established church headed by its constitutional monarch, is among the least. (Richard Dawkins, 2006)

Dear Rutlust (Your name shows humor right there I think..),
This all passed over my head originally, didn't pick up on a hurtful tone.. though I got the word, i missed why the joke, except on cossies screen name I supposed.
reading it all again (umpteenth time)it does sound like a poke at cossie's playfully saying we should protect brian from bad words.. just a poke, a playful prod..like a good natured sparring, playing words off of other words..
now i know you are a vegan & could've been offended further up the thread..
i just don't see what all the hubbub is about.
we each have been joking, kidding, & making humor..
even cossie said "If taken literally.." which isn't the theme of this thread at the present place...
cossie said brian 'should be cossetted & protected'. you said 'if you mean spoiled i agree'. don't see where you called brian spoiled directly. sounds like you approve not shielding a child from coarser words. as if he doesn't know them by now!! hahaha
lets make ammends so we can all still be friends! misunderstandings do occur even among friends of like mind..
seems anyone could be offended at about anything said in this thread, if so inclined. I still don't see malice here.. maybe someone will clarify it..
did you have malice Rutlust??
Thanks for the indulgence.. TeddyB.
