Marc,

>It doesn't alter the fact that unless you get off your arse and go you will never get there...

Yes, yes, yes. I never said I would.

>If it is only 17 miles and the gas is too much for your budget then why not walk? It is but a good stretch of the legs....

Thank you for that useful suggestion. I shall bear it in mind.

The fact of the matter is that I have found this thread very useful. I have identified:

i. some places within 15 or 20 miles of where I live
ii. some useful web sites with associated communities
iii. the recognition that I ought to give the LGB society another shot, as it is "on site", unlike all the other options

I will definitely give option i. a shot provided as soon as I have the time. In the meantime I can either close the thread (by saying, "no more comments, please, until something actually happens") or continue to reply to offshoots of the thread that are not strictly related (such as how much it costs to drive 17 miles and back. Answer: about £3.50-£4 in petrol, plus £6-£7 in running costs).

Let me get this straight... It costs you 6-7 pounds plus fuel for a 34 mile round trip?

Life is great for me... Most of the time... But then I meet people online... Very few are real friends... Many say they are but know nothing of what it means... Some say they are, but are so shallow...

According to the AA rate, which factors in things like servicing, MOTs, car tax, etc., yes. (In fact, the AA rate puts it at more than that. I was being conservative. It should probably be double that on insurance alone, because I'm young and insurance costs a hell of a lot.)

Is that more or less than you expected?

Regardless, it's probably what I would spend on a train ticket to get there. Not sure about buses, because there aren't any buses in this area: I would need to go out of my way to find one.

Guess you maybe right.. Well, it costs us about the same to fill up here. But that's more fuel in a larger car & will go the same miles perhaps.

My highway 'car' is actually a small Ford van prob similar to a Transit van, but made for passenger service. It isn't ideal for one person but was bought as a combo work van & passenger transport, it's paid for & gets about 24 MPG highway at up to about 70 MPH loaded with it's 3 liter fuel injected engine.

My work truck is much larger with a 7.5 liter turbo diesel, weighs about 10 - 12,000 lbs approx and gets in the high teens of MPG. i mostly use it in the town here. It's great for towing & carries almost all my tools, a electric generator & air compressor on board.

I suppose you also saw fuel prices increase markedly since the wars in Afganistan & Iraq.

So much for my contribution to getting off track of this thread!Very Happy
