Or try and have a private conversation when he picks up his paycheck. The important thing, though, is to remember that the longer you leave it, the worse your chances -- he won't know you're thinking of him nearly all the time (and indeed does not need to know that), so if you don't contact him for a few days it will appear that you are less interested in the friendship than you actually are. The more casual it seems, the better. And, obviously, if you leave it too long it will seem odd if you pop up out of the blue one day, once he's already closed that chapter of his life.
In other words -- you have a final chance, but you'll lose it if you leave it too long.
