The word Brit originated among Irish republicans. If that wasn't a hate word, what was?
My passport may say I am a British citizen (I prefer the older term British subject - it had some style about it.), but I am English or an Englishman.

I've heard that anybody can be British, but you have to be born English. That always sounded a little prejudiced against immigrants. At least the way the guys I learned it from said it. Liverpool Football Fans....god help us! But they did share their beer and sandwiches.

Macky, you are correct in what you heard. Fill in the right forms and pay your money, you can be British, but you have to be born and bred English, and of course speak English. Accuse a Scot or a Welshman of being English and you will soon get the rough edge of their tongue.
You say this sounds prejudiced. I view it as a matter of fact. Only opinions can be be prejudiced, not facts. Immigrants become British if they wish.
