It may be within my financial power to buy myself a holiday trip to London. Air fares have become really cheap, and thus it's not entirely out of the question I might be able to stay a week or so.
But I need to know where I could find some cheap lodging too. Must not be the Hilton, but as long as it's within reach of public transportation, clean, and there is running water I'll manage I think! And again, not too bloody expensive.
Input on places to visit also most welcome, not just tourist stuff (I would probably spend a day or two doing stuff like that), but also some calm, laid-back cafe or similar where one might spend some time with like-minded people nursing a cup of hot cocoa or something.
I'm not really suggesting we'd meet face to face or anything (first, I don't know where any of you British peeps live, and second, it might be awkward for either or both of us). I'm not totally against the idea though, but only if any of you insist on it. I would like some advice though.
Any help most graciously accepted. Thank you in advance...

Thanks for the link, it looks quite helpful.
And why awkward? Well, maybe people value their privacy, I dunno. Like to stay hidden behind their monitor screens or something...
If you're not into tourism (and neither am I really to be quite truthful, I just thought it's something one "has" to do when in such an old and famous city ), what would you suggest?
I'm open to just about any suggestion.

I think there are simple things like guided walks. In London I would do something different.
Take the Docklands Light Railway to Island Gardens and walk to the riverside. the view across the river is said to be the "best in London" with regard to the architecture of the Roal Naval College, and Inigo Jones's House (I think that is what it is).
Back towards the station, and on your left is a building with a dome. Thsi is the entrance to a foor tunnel under the thames. A few pence os the toll for walking it, and it brings you into Greenwich, which is both historic and pleasant. A guide book might help. You can walk to the old Royal Observatory and stand with one foot in the west and one in the east across the Greenwich Meridian.
If finances allow, trips on Riverboats give some of the best views of London. A good trip is frm Westminster Pier to Hapmton Court Palace. The palace is costly to enter and is a genuine delight. You can then walk to Hampton Court Sattion and take the train back to London. This will in all take a whole day.
There is so much more, all simple. I like simple.

I have not been to London since 1974. I'm jealous.
But if you ever get a trip to the states, let me know. I would love to meet people from this board face to face.
Hugs, Charlie
