Long time no post.... Sorry guys but I have been a little busy with things recently. You see, I am in the process of buying a house with my boyfriend.

Ordinarily, you would think this is a cause for celebration. And it was, until yesterday.

We are taking out a joint mortgage. This means we have to have life insurance. Big deal, you think. A couple of weeks ago I called several insurers for quotes. They were generally in the range of about £5 (US$7.50 or so) each, which we thought was great. In the end, we decided to go with the company which is part of the same corporation as the Bank lending us the mortgage. When I called to take out the cover, they asked a few more questions (they had already asked if I was a smoker etc before). These questions included things like "Do you engage in high risk activities such as parachuting?"

One of the questions was, in these exact words, "Have you ever had sexual relations with a member of one of the following high-risk groups: male homosexuals, male bisexuals, intravenous drug users?"

Duh! It was a joint application by two men. The insurance lady realised this before I could even point it out to her. My £4 monthly premium then suddenly became £15.50, my partner's increased by slightly less but still nearly 300% we required a medical test where none is ordinarily required (and these were serious medicals - we were offered a choice of male or female doctor), and we were asked to undergo HIV tests - again normally not required.

So I asked her if her company discriminates against homosexual men. She refused to answer. She refused to provide another quote based on my imaginary straight partner.

Draw your own conclusions. I will provide the name of this organisation to anyone who asks privately. I will certainly not be taking out a policy. They are about to lose my car insurance too.

Are there any guys out there who have encountered this before? What did you do? All help appreciated!

I would answer "No" to the high risk groups. I believe the question to be intrusive and abusive. I have never seen it in any insurer's questionnaire to me at all.

That the application is from two men is because each man alone would be unable to afford the house. It has, after all, more than one bedroom!

Your boyfrined is not a memebr of a high risk group of male homosexuals. He is the man you are sharing a house with, and oyur love with. He is monogamous, as are you. The risk is non existent, and thus you do not "lie" per se!

This is not the time for total honesty.

...because this would enable the assurance company to quit the contract at any time. And a mortgage without a security like a life insurance is definetely no fun!

First you lose the insurance, afterwards the mortgage and finally your new home. And with the home you lose the love and money (!) you´ve invested.

My advise is to deal only with fair partners!

I don´t know, but there a lots of companies that are gay-friendly. I know some in germany, but this is no help for you - I guess. Try a search-machine... I found one, but don´t know wether it´s a good one or not:

I would expose this company for discrimination. You should contact all GLBT UK organizations and make sure this company's policies are widely known - who knows how many GLBT have car insurance thru them. They don't deserve a dime from anyone.

I hope this is an isolated incidence, and not standard practice for most insurance companies.

BTW - good to see you again. : )

HUGS AND CONGRATULATIONS on everything - b/f - house....All I can say is "WOW!"
I also just wanted to say....  [message #143 is a reply to message #142] Thu, 10 May 2001 22:32 Go to previous messageGo to next message

I think you owe me an email too!!!! Sorry to hear about the glitch here. I just went thru all my benefits with SWA and to my own shock, they are the only US Airline to offer accross the board benefites to committed Partnerships! Including Life insurance, Medical, Dental, Vision and travel.

On to other things. How are you and Mike. I am so happy for the both of you! Please do keep in touch!
