I'm not sure that we know quite how to walk the tightrope of banter versus using the board asa pseudo chat medium.

Please can we give this some thought?

I'm actually kinda interested in your thoughts on the matter, directly.

could you elaborate, please?  [message #15899 is a reply to message #15896] Fri, 03 October 2003 15:55 Go to previous messageGo to next message

do you mean it shouldn't be used as pseudo-chat mediums? i know that happens sometimes; sometimes accidental or intentional, and you wonder, "hey why don't they just talk in IMs?!" and i can see how that can be somewhat disrupting to the board, or wander away from its purpose and all.

is this what you mean? i just want to be sure i understand, is all, so i could properly give it some thought. Smile

thanks,
h.

It is not clearcut. It is just, to me, when the digression is both trivial and more overwhelming than the topic, I wonder if we are getting it right

Oh indeed. But riding herd on this bunch (no offense) isn't easy anyways. I mean, we are all such diverse and, in cases like myself, strong personalities that we invariably wind up stepping on someone's toes. Perhaps we all need a really big lump of salt nearby so when someone says something we disagree with, or that might be mildly annoying to the point of rage, you just reach over and scrape a bit of salt off the lump and take the advice with that.

After all, without salt potatoes just have no flavor, right. And butter....oh oh, and sour cream and those little onion thingies that are green, maybe some melted cheedar, ooooh that sounds so good.....can you tell it's lunch time?

You know, I'm kinda guilty of not reading the mission statement at the top of the board. And for that I am sorry, because you've already answered my and your own question Timmy. That's the rules of the place, right there. Interpreting them might be a loose matter for some, but in the end, the purpose of the place is just as important as anything else, and the rules are right there at the top.

Which just goes to show you, you can see a sign a thousand times and not understand it until you take the time to read it.

Simple to ask for, not simple to implement.

If an instant message program is better, like for a quick riposte, or for a deeply perosnal message, then I tend to feel that an IM program is better.

but Webtv users have no access to those, so that is harder.

There is a difference between banter and detritus. But my banter is your trash and your banter is my trash.

Somewhere in the midst of this lies the right answer.

Why not let's try "If what you have to say is ephemeral, or is better lost on the breeze, then use a chat program"

You see a place like this keeps a permanenet record of "stuff."

This doesn't mean that light heartedness is suddenly outlawed. Nor fun. But there is a serious reason for this place existing. And it does look at present like the Pink Ladies clique. Which is not what I feel we should be showing to people. Chats on the board look cliquy(sp?). Messages tend not to.

Oh, crud. I think I might be the reason for this; take a look at my persistant and pointless posts in such threads as "Story cliffhangers--Should they be outlawed??" I think I've been abusing the "submit" button over the past couple of days, which equates to a not-too-desirable track record on my part. Sorry fellas.

Not necessarily. I believe that the problems here aren't about the number of posts, but their nature. So far, I haven't seen a mean streak in anything you've posted. I think a lot of us try hard to keep that venom out of our voices. I know I do. And it's not easy some times.

You don't have anything to worry about Mach.

I know that since I started posting on this board, I have run the threads all over the place... depending on the whim of the moment...

I apologize for that. I did get carried away.

I did notice it the other day however, and have since attempted to stop it, as I do respect the reason this message board exists...

My heart is right, I believe... my mind gets carried away...

I'm sorry, Timmy.. and those who I have offended by causing them to read my drivel...

Hugs and Peace all....
