The ticker just said "Gay outdoors team ready to tackle the Himalayas".

Oh good grief! To me this is another exmaple of a self imposed ghetto.

And before you mention it, what if they had been the Heralayas?

I've seen that news post scroll by for a couple days now, and I've been like, "wtf?!"...

I mean, what's the point of it? "Hey, we're gay and we're outdoorsmen, let's go climb the himalayans, just for the sake of it and to get in the news!", or what? Smile

It sounds a bit silly to me, that's all.

I don't think a PRIDE thing is ever silly.  [message #1928 is a reply to message #1925] Sat, 06 April 2002 20:38 Go to previous messageGo to next message

...But if they'd been stamp-collecting outdoorsmen or trainspotting outdoorsmen, would it REALLY have been anything noteworthy to talk about?

Why should we care simply because these people happen to be gay? I don't see the point at all, I mean, lots of people have climbed the himalayans. It's not news, I'm sorry.

Okay, it's cool people do these things (if they bring with them all the rubbish they drag up those mountains when they go down again, which often isn't the case), but this is stretching it in my opinion. Smile

How far does this pride thing go anyway? Gay people walking across town on stilts = gay pride? Gay hotdog eating competition = gay pride? Smile

Sorry, but I don't buy it.

Don't like discrimination against gays of course, but let's not go overboard in the other direction please. Just my $.05...

If peeps are interested, there's a pretty interesting discussion of gay pride over on Eggie's MB. The younger people take a lot of being able to say that something-or-other is a gay activity for granted, no big deal. That proves the victory of the pride movement in general.

It didn't used to be. The world never permitted the adjective to be used. So, yes, I am in favor of gay hiking groups, gay stamp collecting groups, gay sports groups, all of it.

Not that they should be particularly proud to be gay doing those things, but that they can now be free to say that's what it is.

I'll never take that for granted. Nobody should.

And of course, I'll almost always make fun of the gay Scotish Highland games...they're silly no matter who does them...heheheh
