Tim posted a mail he got from some old fart that whined over one of his stories. Well, I got my first whiner today in my inbox, and it kind of made me sit up straight.

All other email I've got so far has been very nice and considerate. Some of them just a line or two, others a lot longer. Overall it has been a very pleasant experience. I was wondering, how common IS this really? Not very, it would seem to me, but then, I'm not on Nifty either where all sort of riff-raff might hang out. Tim's site is host to a much classier clientele I would think.

Well, here's my reply to this guy (I see no particular reason to disclose his full name or email address, his original mail is inline with my comments):

Greetings, Charles!

Thanks for your email, even though it really wasn't the most supportive one I've received so far. Well, it's the thought that counts I guess, so thank you anyway.

>yes certianly we need this story to finish. what is the sense of writing a story and not give it a finish. i have complained to many authors about this some give up completly.

I don't mean this as an offense, but complaining probably isn't the best way to get an author to write more. Just a friendly hint from someone "in the know"... Wink

>if you do not intend to finish do us afavour and say at the beggining that you do not intend to finish DO NOT START AND DO NOT POST IT that way we do not get pissed opff to find that after hours readinmg a story that is very interesting to find out there is no finish nd especially one like this if you cannot finish do not start.

You seem awfully worked up over this, and I really don't see why.

First, I never said I wouldn't 'finish' it. I promised three parts at the beginning and you got three parts. So that piece of the bargain (if you can call it that, since I'm under no contractual obligation to provide *anything* to you) was fulfilled.

Second, you say you enjoyed it. Well, can't you be satisfied with the hours you spent enjoying yourself then?

Third, I said at the end of the third part I might write more to the story if people wanted it. And while your email really didn't inspire me to do anything of the sort I'm sad to say, others have. And the fourth part IS FINISHED and will hopefully go up at IOMfAtS in just a few days or less if he approves of it!

>i have had rows with a few more authors that have done this give us a warning so we do not waste time reading this garbage

Oh, so it's garbage now is it? Well by all means, then DON'T read the fourth part! Wink

And finally, while I kind of appreciate you taking the time to write me, I really would prefer if your general tone was more polite and appreciative of the MANY MANY MANY hours I spent writing all this (far more than what you did reading it I might add, so don't complain to me about ME wasting YOUR time) if you pop off an email in my direction again, should you choose to do so. Which you are perfectly welcome to do by the way. I enjoy reader email (some more than others).

You always get more from the donkey with a carrot than a stick. So don't yell at me. The First Son is over 285.000 bytes or 54.000 words in size. You think that kind of effort is easy to pull off? Now go read my two other stories, they're both stand-alone so you needen't feel cheated for lack of follow-ups! Very Happy Please tell me what you think of them too, I look forward to hearing your honest opinions.

Hi bud. How on earth could anyone flame your story 'First Son'? How can he call it garbage. He must have nothing else better to do. I must say that it is too good to leave there but if you did decide to do that it would still be a good point to leave it, though you say chapter four will soon be up Smile, glad to hear that. I've seen some stories left in worst places than that.

I've had quit a few emails for my story but only had one flame, guess I'm lucky, the best thing to do is just ignore them dude.

Hugs.

i haven't read your story, so i can't comment on that, but i'm wondering how you could stay that polite in your reply, my reply to such an e-mail would have been slightly different. yeah...slightly different indeed. Smile

love,
brian

Same whine, same guy, same old scrote. Rude, abrasive, aggressive, the lot.

Now if he were buying something, then there is a difference. I took him of my distribution list and blacklisted him. Do send me in prvate his latest email address so I can ensure that is blacked too.

First of all your story was great and part three surpassed the already high expectation I had of it from the first two parts.
Secondly Lenny you should remember that not all the people out there have good taste so there might be some who would not like your story (Yes some strange people like that are out there Smile).

But about your question, no you were not too polite you were polite enough, you should never sink to their level of comments and by being polite your denying them the anger they were trying to invoke! good job! Smile

Love, Gil

You know I LOVE that story. I can't wait
for the next chapter. He is just an old
crank who likes to complain. You showed
mucho restraint. I don't know that I would
have been quite so polite Razz Maybe you need
a "middle finger" smilie for your e-mail.

Heh.

Charlie: good to hear you have nice experiences also. Thanks for the show of support...

Brian, of course I could have flipped this guy the finger and flamed his ass back without feeling much in the way of a bad conscience (he did use the "G-word" after all Smile), but I thought maybe he'd respond better to a polite reply. I WAS going to call him a prat and put a smiley right after it when he mentioned the G-word, but I then decided against it. It seemed hypocritical when I'd been nice in the rest of the email.

Kevin: I won't let this guy get under my skin, his email was more like sad rather than truly evil. Maybe he's a lonely guy feeling angry because he's old and impotent? Smile

Tim, I don't know if I should give you his (new?) address. After all, he hasn't harassed you again, has he? Wouldn't it be unethical of me to do that? I'm not refusing outright, I just want to make sure I don't do anything rash here. If he annoys me or you again, I promise I will give you his address in the blink of an eye, but maybe I can turn him around? Smile

Gil, I agree with you. Being polite can be very effective in disarming an opponent, and besides, I want all the happy readers I can get. Pissing one off, even though he was a bit nasty, seems counter-productive to me.

smith: thanks man. Your words mean more to me than I can possibly express in mere words... Be good, okay?
