She is having a full hysterectomy about this time tomorrow, or as I explained to my boys, "getting spayed like the cat."

Total prayers. It has gone well for us, on 4 December. She will hurt like hell afterwards, so be extra solicitous after her health, and if you can arrange to work from home to look after her.
Cats can climb fences afterwards, she wil climb the walls instead.

Thanks. I'll pass along your thoughts. Work? Ah, a distant memory, but hopefully in the not-too-distant future. I AM assuming it to be a full-time job for at least a week playing nurse maid and keeping the boys from irritating her - they will be on summer break soon - plus a few more weeks of total rest. Fortunately, I'm also a great "wife" regarding cooking, housework, groceries, etc. I'll be returning yours regarding flight school.

Depending om the reason for the surgery, if she was fit before she will be able to start returning (eg) the gym in about 6 weeks. BUT make sure no small children run into her midriff. For AGES.
She will be walking in 2 days, but TRY to stay in hospital as long as possible. When she gets home she will try to take charge. That will set her back two full days.
Afterwards, for practical purposes I recommend Astroglide!

My mom had a hysterectomy just last Monday.
She is feeling very good and is up a bit
and smiling.
Take very good care of her, baby her. It
really hurts to laugh or cough and such
and the walking around is difficult at first.
Don't let her worry about the house or the
kids. I caught my mom trying to get up to
swipe at a cobweb on the ceiling. Then, I
was making her laugh as I tried to get it
with the broom. It's kind of a no win situation
the first few days.
I'll be thinking of you all the next few days.

It seems pretty quite around here, so I thought I'd give you the blow-by-blow on the slice 'n' dice. Hrmm, maybe not. Please pardon the odd humor or attempt thereat - got about 90 minutes of sleep last night and am stir-crazy as well.
Well, Karen is doing quite good. The procedure took
about an hour longer than expected but everything
turned out fine and she's as comfortable as can be
expected. I had forgotten that if you ever need to
make time stand still, the surgery lounge comes very
close - waiting seems like an eternity.
Unfortunately she can't sleep much yet because every
10 minutes or so the pain gets worse end she has to
press the button to make the "happy juice" flow into
the IV. I think it's more like "apathy juice" since
she isn't exactly happy, but able to take another
quick nap.
Always looking for "a deal", Karen did mangage to add
a few last-minute semi-cosmetic procedures to the
surgery agenda - two moles and a skin-flapper or "tag"
on her neck were removed as well.
Her surgery punch card is nearly full now - I think
this will be the seventh not including births, so that
free one isn't too far away now.
It sounds like she'll be in the hospital until at
least late Saturday, but probably part of Sunday as
well.
She says thanks for all the prayers and well-wishes,
although it came out more like "hrmmpf grmmn." They
must have helped - she was much less nervous about
this procedure than the last few, and it was more
invasive than any of the others.

"We" had the iv button pressing thingy. It ran out twice and it made Mel scream at the nurses because of poor prescribing. I made a heavy duty formal complaint.
The pain eases around day 3. Walking UPRIGHT is vital, even though she will wish to be huddled over. Two paces upright are better than 10 huddled.
She will try to take over when she gets home. Make sure she does not. Simply coming home is exhausting.

I'm not sure what exactly a histectomy or whatever ( ) is, but I do wish her a speedy recovery. Glad the procedure itself went as smoothly as can be expected.

Doing even better today - day 2 - but may be there for 4 days! Meds are better, she's coherent and alert when awake. No button last night so some sleep and one walk around the ward yesterday and today, but she wants real food - even crappy hospital food. That's probably good that that's the worst of her worries.
Lenny - Hysterectomy is removal of the uterus and attached cervix. In her case, ovaries are also being removed. If it were you, that would be like removing prostate and testicles (err - I'm assuming - your pic wasn't THAT detailed.) But she should still be able to have good sex, a necessity for her! and hormone replacement should be workable. No more periods, no fear of menopause - yea!
Tim - Speaking of sex, what, pray tell, is Astroglide? Like KY jelly or something else? Wasn't Astro the name of the Jetson's dog. Ugh - erase that image. Also, she's not exactly the "take over the household type" - that's mostly already my domain and she's not a "highly motivated homemaker" type, so no worries there.
