These are the last few moments before I leave for the central bus station where the airport bus will (hopefully) take me to the airport.

I'm kinda nervous here. Not only is this the first trip I've taken abroad since 1995 (well, airplane trip abroad anyway), it's the first trip I've ever planned and prepared for all by myself, and I hope I haven't screwed up somehow...

I can't think of anything that I've forgotten, but that's the way it is with forgetfulness isn't it, heh? Smile Anyway, I don't think I have. Well, nothing important anyway.

So please wish me good luck, if I'm unlucky, I might actually need it. Smile

I arrived at the airport in good time for check-in, I sat in the lounge and read a newspaper while the guy beside me enjoyed a garlic beer. Or else he'd had a garlic breakfast, GOD DAMN did he smell! AAARGH! (And he was a white anglo-saxon guy too, so no stereotypes fit, hehehe!).

Well anyway, plane lifted off a little late. Not too much, ten minutes or so perhaps. The flight was uneventful, silly me thought it would take 50 minutes which I thought was bloody quick, but what I did not expect when the ticket said, takeoff 11.00 AM, landing 11.50 AM, was that landing was LOCAL TIME (of course! Silly me!)... Smile

Also, I do consider my ability to understand spoken English to be fairly good, but this woman stewardess, she had me completely stumped. Does she get paid by words per minute, does she HAVE to speak so bloody fast? And couple that with that droning tone of voice air stewardesses are supposed to all use when using the announcement system, and the fact her voice was quite fair, and the volume turned up HIGH, it made my ears kind of balk at the sound and I had a terribly hard time hearing what she was saying.

I dozed a little before we started our descent towards Stansted Airport (or is that Stanstead?). Baggage reclaim was slow as hell, took half an hour I think, or close to it anyway with all the walking I had to do (the place is BIG, but very modern and quite nice). Up and down, UP AND DOWN I had to go in the stairs, hehehe! Anyway, I reached the baggage reclaim area, got my stuff and went through customs, smooth as an Asian twink's bottom. Wink

Asked for the cheapest public transport to London, big mistake. Bus. I didn't get to know until AFTER I bought an open-ended return ticket that the trip took a bloody hour and three quarters! And that was counting it low, since London traffic is like three times worse than anything I've ever encountered back home... You really notice this is a BIG city! I got suckered into dishing out £12 for a two-way trip, but I think I'll take it on the chin and buy a train ticket for the trip back. Haven't decided yet...

It must have taken us at least two freakin hours to reach Victoria Station, and then I had to queue for fifteen more minutes to get a week pass to the subway system (which is an experience in itself for a "country lad" like myself, used to a city of no more than 300.000 at most, 500.000 in the greater area), and TRAMS at that, not subway cars! I also queued ANOTHER 20 mins needlessly behind a woman with an ass as wide as a barnyard to buy a train ticket for tomorrow only to get to know I didn't NEED to queue... Hahaha, that's so funny LOLOLOL... Uh, no. Not really.

The only thing that was slightly amusing was hearing the automatic announcer announce a teller was free by saying stuff like: "Position two...please..." in a tinny yet rather seductive voice I thought! Smile (Position two? SURE, dude! I'll give ya position two for all you're worth! Very Happy) You brits sure like weird voices like that, I've noticed several already!

I hauled my bag around (which wasn't so bad now that I'm all buffed and stuff! Smile, apart from the city being rather stifling today, not so hot perhaps, but STIFLING!). Finally reached Rotherhithe Youth Hostel, and was of course greeted by the fact my internet registration had NOT registred. I wasn't even listed as a member of the YHA, even though they had sent me all the membership info and my membership card (which I of course forgot to bring with me!), and drawn money from my account! For the membership that is, not the booking. I stood there in the sun (love panoramic windows, NOT!), for like half an hour while I got the mess sorted. Fortunately they had spare beds, so I do not have to live on the street... Cost me £120, which will be slightly more than I expected to pay I think, but I'll manage. I also have to change rooms TWICE, but that is a minor annoyance since there's no room to unpack anything anyway. All you get at that place is a small locker for your bag and a bed and that's it.

After stowing my stuff, I went out again (love that Jubilee line, it's like straight out of Bladerunner or something, heheh!), and ended up at Leichester Square. Second time I'm there in my life, and it really didn't look one bit like I remember it... Well, it WAS way back in 1988, so things are bound to have changed a bit!

I was again reminded of how DENSELY this city's populated when I got there. There was people friggin' everywhere, one "human statue" performing next to a juggler who was next to a street preacher screaming about Jesus! Sound and color and people everywhere, it's really rather intimidating I must say, and I've always considered myself a rather "urban" person!

I had a dinner at a restaurant a little off the main square, I had steamed (or grilled?) chicken breast in a curry and coconut milk sauce on a bed of egg-fried rice, tasted really nice and it wasn't too expensive except for the drink. £2.30 for a large coke light, that's exorbitant but I WAS damn thirsty! It's like 50% more expensive than back home! Same with movie tickets to MIB2 at the Odeon, £10 (or £11 for the middle section of the theatre) is MORE than 50% more expensive!

That disappointed. But now I'm here at an internet cafe just off Trafalgar, and I have only 11 minutes left of my one quid ticket. So I have to go now, and besides, there's not much left to tell anyway so far. See you tomorrow, you-know-who! Smile

Now THAT's a plane I wanna get on. hehehe Somehow I think you are having a much better time than you are letting on. You're such a tease. I wish I was there. I had to work today. Usually I have Fridays off. That make two weekends in a row. Oh well, I'm done now. I think it's time to kick back, grab a beer, and watch the Cleveland Indians lose another one. Ugh! Game time in two hours. I'll be playing around online til then.

Enjoy, Lenny and here's a great big HUG.

The keyboard has a funny little button with an LED and a symbol of a coffee cup above it. I guess, when one presses the button, the computer starts brewing a pot... Hmmm...

Anyway, I am HERE. I catched the right train (and technically I wouldn't have needed a ticket since nobody bothered to check it), it rained like hell when I arrived, I tought I was lost (but wasn't) and my sheet with directions got soaked and almost ripped apart, but I DID get here.

Thanks to all that wished me good luck, it helped!

Now I gotta go back downstairs again, there's lunch being served and I don't want to be impolite by sitting behind a computer screen! Smile

(Brit keyboard layout is a bit unfamiliar...)

I was THERE! (It is safe to speak of now, I hope. Smile)

To all of you who didn't, and couldn't come, you don't know what you missed. I don't mean the food, and for some, the drink, but the sheer experience of it all.

Tim is as gracious, well-spoken and big-hearted in person as he is on-line. No, correction: more even!

Tim, love you! Thank you SO MUCH for a wonderful time... I really don't enjoy parties that much (I'm not that kind of person), but meeting YOU, it meant more to me than mere words can say. (And re. Alex... You know I agree with what you said, even though I did not speak anything out loud.) And re. tuesday, please email me so we can set a time & date properly...

And to Tom, even though I know you'll probably won't read this: love you too, I can't describe how wonderful it was to finally meet you! Fantastic, simply fantastic.

I was there too!

It was a great party (and, like Lenny, I am not normally a party animal). Tim was on great form and so welcoming and kind hearted.

Of course, being an English summer, it rained. But that didn't dampen our spirits! Food was great (with loads left over - we needed you guys there to help us finish it!). And there was even running water!

It was really nice meeting you too, Lenny. Maybe we can meet up again before you head home.

Tim, thank you so much. And have a great birthday on Monday.

I have plenty of spare time in which we could meet up, but I can't call you, my mobile can only receive calls here in England it seems... Sad

Please contact me at my Zustara account with your home email address so I can send you my mobile number (which I don't think I remembered to give you). Or can you access your work email from home? In that case I'll send it there.

Sunday was a mixed blessing.

First off, I was really hoping Tom would be able to stay one more day so I could get to know him properly (he's a good lad, he really is, and with a wicked sense of humor! Smile), but it seems he couldn't make it. On top of that, many stores on Tottenham Court Road were closed, so I could not shop for the kind of consumer goods I wanted (Minidisc player, for example), and just when I was going to check out Oxford Street for watches, a rainstorm of biblical proportions struck... SIGH!

Thank goodness for Nick though! He came to my rescue, and we spent a wonderful evening together at Covenant Garden (weirdest subway station I've seen yet, those 193 stairsteps actually managed to make me a feel a little bit tired! (Six months ago it would have killed me walking up those stairs... Smile)

We both had spicy Italian meat-a balls with spaghetti, and it tasted quite nice actually I really must say. The waitress nicked Nick's wine before he was done with it. I must commend him for his polite way of showing his dissatisfaction, but I would also have demanded compensation in some form, even though there was only a little left of it.

Afterwards, he had some almond and lemon tart (not the female kind, heheh!), while I tried a cherry-jam-topped slice of cheese cake.

My host of the evening was gracious enough to treat me to the entire meal, dessert, beverages and all! Thank you, Nick! It really made me feel privileged!

Afterwards, we had a small tour of the city where I got to see things such as Charing Cross Road, the Millennium Wheel thingy, and the Houses of Parliament at a distance. It was REALLY nice, especially since the rain had stopped some hours back as well...! Don't think there would have been much walking done if it had been raining. Smile

So it was a day that started out in disappointment, but ended much, much better!

Now I hope my friend Setras will be able to make it to our planned meeting today in about 25 minutes. Therefore, time to cut this report short now, then do a quick email check, and get my butt over to Leichester Square (which wasn't the best of places to decide on I realize after having been there on friday evening, but it's too late to change now.)

So, until later, folks! (And thanks to Nick again for being such a great guy and taking care of me yesterday!)

YYEEAAHH!

Just sent him off at the subway station!

I took Tim's good advice and drew a sign with his name on so he'd spot me more easily and it WORKED! He walked up to me like 11.07 or something because he took one of the other tube exits and didn't see me the first time 'round.

Here's the cool part... I don't know if any of you noticing me posting some months back on the Glass Onion and Comsie's Shack, that I would be going to London or not. Well, I didn't get any response to those posts except Setras spotted it and actually adjusted his travel schedule to co-incide with mine! I actually feel a bit flattered by that, and meeting him was a really pleasant experience. He's such a nice person!

We started out by going to a couple bookstores, including one that Nick pointed out to me saying it was a good one (thanks, mate!). I had said my schedule was totally undecided for the day and I would agree to whatever suggestions he had in mind (if I tell you not to get any dirty ideas into your heads at this point you will undoubtedly start to get dirty ideas into your heads, so I won't say it. But it's already too late, so I guess you're already getting lots and lots of dirty ideas into your heads but you can all just forget them again because all we did was visit some book stores! LOL!)

Unfortunately, none of them had the book my friend was looking for, so then we proceeded to fulfilling my dream, finding that particular watch I've been pining for for a few weeks now (it costs more than US$300 in Sweden), and we didn't. But we DID find that same watch except with a plastic casing/wristband instead of a titanium one, but it didn't look nearly as snazzy unfortunately as the metal one! And it still cost £140, which is a bit more than the same watch bought from a Swedish website so I didn't get it.

I picked a cheaper watch instead (£80), a G-Shock model with a blue see-through armband and shiny brushed metal casing, featuring such useless features as moon phase and tide display, pointless features such as dual-layer, two-color LCD display and blue backlight, and useful features such as multi-alarm and timer! Smile I'm a sucker for useless and pointless features on watches, the one I really wanted has a digital compass, barometer/altimeter and temperature sensor built into it, none of which I need!

We also went around stores checking prices for minidisc players. I got me a Sony Net MD, the MZ-N1 (top of the line model) with USB connection, 32x transfer speed, longplay mode (four CDs worth of music on one minidisc) and, of course, pointless features such as backlit LCD displays both on the unit itself AND the remote control! That particular unit would have cost me about US$450 in Sweden, I now paid LESS than US$320, and then I suckered the salesperson into throwing in five 80min high-quality recordable MDs too. He wanted to give me 74min discs, but I told him to add a couple quid on the price for the 80min discs and then I just got them for free instead, heheh! Smile

I haven't actually TOUCHED the unit with my bare hands yet which amazes me, because I am a total technonerd and a gadget-freak, but I had Setras keeping me company and I was too absorbed by that.

After getting some shopping done, we had "lunch" around two thirty I think at a Pizza Hut while talking and having a generally great time I think while the rain poured down and thunder pealed again outside! (Weather's REALLY unstable in this city I've noticed!)

After lunch we did more walking, first to an Odeon to go see a movie, but it had just started so we skipped that and decided to go on the 17.15 screening instead. We then went to Forbidden Planet, which Setras had been outside of the day before but it was closed then. It's really a haven for us sci-fi nerds, LOL! I wanted to try and find some old 2000AD comic books, but they didn't have them. We were sent on a quest to two differen comics stores to find them, but they didn't have them either! Typical... We then embarked on a quest to track down a gay bookstore Setras had found on the internet in a last-ditch attempt to find the book he was looking for. They didn't have it EITHER, hehe!

We returned to the cinema in perfect time to see MIB2 though, and it WAS a good movie. We had some thoughts over our pizza lunch about seeing About a Boy, but we weren't sure if it was our kind of movie or not, even though I've had it recommended to me by one of my email friends. Anyway, we picked MIB2, and while it wasn't extremely funny, it was definitely QUITE amusing, and I will undoubtedly get the DVD when it is released in a bunch of months. After the movie, it was time for Setras to go back to his au pair cousins' place to have dinner, so we said our goodbyes on the subway.

No wet kisses or groping or anything like that, again, don't get any ideas! Not that he isn't good-looking enough for such though... Wink (But he really should let his hair grow a bit more in my opinion, but he likes it that way so there you have it...)

So in all, this has ALSO been an extremely worthwile day. My feet are half-dead, but it was SO worth it! And now I will surf a bit, and then check out my new watch properly, and the MD player too of course...!

YUM!

That sounds like such a cool day. I can spend a week in a good bookstore, if they've got lot's of coffee. The watch sounds cool to. I love watches with lots of useless functions. Unfortunately, my wife seems to get me one every year or two as a present, but they never have any useless functions, unless you count the fact that it goes on my wrist only to be completely ignored. But how in the world could you go all the way to London and then eat at a Pizza Hut???

And walked, first past the Milennium Wheel, the sole thing in London that people actually wanted to celebrate the wrong year!

Then we hit(!) the Houses of Parliament, walking past the tower that houses the bell called "Big Ben". The tower is St Stephen's Tower, for pedantic bastards like me.

Neother of us could afford entry fees, so we walked into a quiet park by the river, and thence round the back of Westminster Abbey through the quietness of Dean's yard, and then into the free bit! Didn't jesus turf out market stall holders fromthe temple? Needs to be done here, too.

What a contrast with the RC Westminster Cathedral, which is so obviously a place of worship. Odd building. Grand up to the gallewry, and industrial brick above that.

Out form there we wandered past New Scotland yard (unimpressive office block) and across the from of Buckingham Palace. Liz and Phil the Greek were out, though.

Through Green park, we had an expedition into the hallowed emporium of Fortnum and Mason to ogle the goods and wonder at the prices. But it had a loo. At my age you NEVER pass a loo without a pee!

Then on across Piccadilly Circus with Eros to soho, where we had a culinary experience, followed by a visit to a couple of sex shops. Well you have to, don't you?

Tube then to Tower Hill. A walk around the outside of the Tower of London, and we did stand across the gap in Tower Bridge, too, and did the full tourist bit.

St Katherine's Yacht Haven (Old commercial docks that were closed after Jack Dash and the unions killed almost all UK dock work and sent it to Rotterdam), and then alonmg the river embankment to The Monument.

This is a doric column which commemorates the Great Fire of London in 1666, which destroyed much of the city. It is 220 feet tall, and has 311 stairs inside. We climbed them all.

We HAD been searching for a public toilet. Fromthe top of the monument we saw it! And NO, we did NOT piss from the top. I bet many have, though.

Then a sit in a coffee bar and chat, and I had to leave. We walked solidly from about 11 until about 5. Exhausted.

(This was supposed to have gone up around 6.30 PM (starting to use English time, LOL!), but the board was somewhat "confused", so I couldn't post. Thank the Gates for Hotmail, and its Drafts folder, I squirreled it all away there until now.)

I feel like a spoiled little kid! Smile Everybody keeps being so nice to me, what have I ever done to deserve it?

Tim was there at the big clock a little late - just like me - so it was almost perfect timing. I snuck up on him because I saw him first, that was fun! Hehe!

We proceeded out of Waterloo Station the same way Nick and I had entered it two days before, which is on a walkway apparantly going through the nasty Shell oil company's headquarters, or something like that.

Tim had asked me what I wanted to do, but I didn't have much of a clue except take a closer look at the parliament building and such. It's big and fancy and all that, but not really as big as it looks when you see it from a distance/on TV. Tim snapped two pics of me with the building as background, maybe he'll put 'em up on his photo pages if I ask nicely. Smile

I learned about London really being a conglomerate of smaller towns/cities grown into a large one, which I did not know about, nor really expected even though it does sound logical. After all, things were smaller in the past...

From the parliament we proceeded through a nice neighborhood of what I thought was pittoresque houses, but actually were offices, on to the Westminster Abbey - which seems to have been converted from a place of worship to a tourist mecca so to speak. Goes strongly against a certain section of the bible, but who cares about such little things anymore? Wink

As I really had no idea what I wanted to do nor wanted to go, I relied on my host's vast reserves of knowledge. He suggested, and I complied, then we walked. We passed by New Scotland Yard, which was a most unremarkable place, then steered towards Ye Olde Queen's Cottage, that little vacation home called Buckingham Palace.

It was a big grey building. Remarkably unexciting too, but then again, maybe that's because I'm like *yawn* when it comes to royalty. Knowing they too visit the bathroom and such really doesn't help to make them into larger-than-life figures, hehe! (And it's only prince William who's any good-looking of the lot as well. We're all fortunate he took after his mother, good grief we don't need any more big-eared eagle-beaks like prince Charles, LOL!)

We proceeded through some parks and onwards into the Soho district, where we walked around a little, checking out the scenery. Tim took me into a few sex shops, including a place where they sold gay DVDs and proceeded to have an open-hearted conversation with the guy behind the cash register re. said DVDs. I'm not sure what that guy thought about me, maybe he believed I was Tim's little plaything or something, heh heh! Smile Smile (But then again I'm taller than Tim, but maybe that wouldn't matter, he could still have been my sugar daddy, LOL!)

We also had a nice lunch at Mr Lee's (or something like that), a Chinese lunch buffet place that wasn't bad at all. The food tasted fresh, the selection was - in my limited opinion of Chinese dishes anyway - large and varied, and it all went down smoothly along with a glass of diet coke. Tim had tea. And it was all on him... *Blushes!* Thanks...!

Tower of London was our next stop I believe, after walking a bit more to a subway station. We didn't spend so much attention on the tower itself after reaching it, but rather on the Tower Bridge just nearby which I found a lot more interesting. I wish I could have been able to get up to the walkways across the top, but since those were closed due to people leaping to their death from them that wasn't possible. We also checked out the old dock nearby and such, and we talked a lot as we hung around the river (topics ranging from kids buggering each other to the size of cannons. On gunboats that is, LOL!). It was lovely, but a bit crummy weather (cloudy sky). I don't know how Londoners in general put up with it, weather can switch from clear sky to rain inside of five minutes and then back again!

A futile search for a public loo through a walkway that smelled like a fuggin' loo made us end up at the monument over the London fire (which we also intended to visit all along by the way). Tim got TIRED by walking the 300+ steps to the top, poor guy! Hehe. I got warm, and my heartrate increased, but I didn't really FEEL tired. Oh well, I just have to wait another 20 years and I'll be in his shoes... Smile The view from the top was spectacular, even though the taller office buildings blocked some of it.

We did spot the loo we had been looking for though (some practical goodness came out of all that climbing, hahaha!), and after a quick pitstop there we ended up at a Starbucks where I wanted some hot chocolate, which my friendly host again treated me to. (As I said, it makes me feel quite a bit spoiled, but it's a good feeling too! Smile) Tim had a raspberry tea something-thing drink I believe...

We were QUITE surprised to find our drinks were actually crushed ICE drinks! LOL! What a monumental cock-up! Smile But they still tasted fine, and since they were cold and could not be ingested very fast we got the chance to do some more honest talking (even though it's pretty hard for me to talk about personal stuff, especially in person with somebody else no matter how trustworthy they are...). And, I talked Tim into squeezing my leg, hehehehe! (Which I hope he did not mind.)

Afterwards, we continued on to Waterloo station again and then Tim had to go home Sad, while I proceeded to my internet cafe to write this small report...

I hope I did not wear you out with all that walking, my friend! Hope the dancing goes [went] well tonight [last night]... (I know MY feet sure feel [felt] pretty darn tired by now [then]!)

Thanks for helping my London visit to become a memorable one, and all the treats, and for the wonderful, lovely hug you gave me when we parted. AND your SMS too...! It all means so very, very much to me. Thank you!

-Lenny
