It seems that someone is forging my email address as the "reply to" address in email they are sending out with an attachment containing a virus. I found out when an email was "returned" to me as undeliverable. I never sent it to begin with. I inquired with MSN and this is what they told me:

"I have researched your account and found that it appears you are the only person logging into it. For security, we would suggest changing your password and Secret Question/Answer at this time. A good rule of thumb is to change your passwords regularly.

Someone has forged, your e-mail address as the 'reply-to' or "from" field on a piece of unsolicited e-mail. This does not require the person to log into the account. Most likely, it was either a typographical error on the sender's part." "

I doubt that it was a typographical error. Most likely it was intentionally done. If any of you receive any email with attachment from me, look at the full header to make certain it was actually from me. The returned one that I received originated at the following address: Sherbears3268@aol.com.

Needless to say I am quite annoyed at this. It's one thing to send a virus to me and try to attack me computer, but sending out a virus trying to make it look like it was me is gutless and cowardly.

Oh well, just be careful.

Think good thoughts,
e

This is a well-known virus, one of the Klez variety. Download the antitoxin program from your antivirus provider.

On second thoughts, change your antivirus provider because if your antivirus program didn't pick up on this one you are way out of date!

Sorry to be so unhelpful. (I think that most reputable antivirus providers will let you download an antitoxin for the Klez viruses for free - I think, but I'm not sure.)

E, you need to have an antivirus that updates regularly: mine has sent me updates three times in the last 24 hours!

I run Norton Antivirus and it updates every day and does a daily scan. It will detect Klez. This was no virus. This is something a person did. All they had to do was obtain my email address, set their email program to have replies sent to my address, then send an email with a virus attached. Unless you look at the full header, you would think it came from me. MSN has assured me that this email did not originate from my computer. It was sent to me from somewhere else. I just don't want people thinking that this is coming from me. It is not. Most likely it is someone who is just sending this to me. I've been getting that a lot lately. This is just more creative than usual because of the way it was sent.

The way these viruses work is they use the infected PC's address book (sometimes history or temp/cached addresses) to get/create e-mail addresses and then send an infection to others in the address book.

So, it most likely is someone who has "e" in their address book that is infected and THE VIRUS is masquerading as "e". If you look at the IP address and possibly reverse DNS name in the full header, you can see what MACHINE sent the virus, but that's about the best you'll be able to do.

I seriously doubt there's anything "e" can do because it's someone else's problem. I guess this is sort of a form of identity theft, eh?

I know that my computer is clean. I heeded some advice and got a clean copy of McAfee with the latest updates on a bootable CD from one of our computer wizards at work today. My computer is clean. No viruses found. You are right, Trevor. It could be a rather nasty virus sending emails from somebody else's computer in my name instead of some evil person doing it intentionally. I have sent an email to the address where the virus originated asking the person to check their computer. In the meantime, anyone who gets a message from me should scan any attachment. In fact if it has an attachment, it's not likely that I sent it in the first place. About the only person in here I have ever sent an attachment to is Tim when I send him my stories.
