I expect that most of us here receive spam from time to time and do our best to filter it or block it, or if it gets through then just delete it.

Today, however, I received a series of messages that were unusual in two respects. First, the subject header was extremely offensive and second the text of the message contained "removal" instructions not to respond by e-mail, but to ring a particular telephone number or write to a specific address.

It is my guess that the telephone number and address given belong not to the spammer, but to a victim whom the spammer is hoping will be inundated with phone calls from aggrieved people and hate mail.

The e-mails originate from addresses with forged headers and I have forwarded them to Spam Cop.

Is there any other action I can take or should I just forget about it? This is extremely distateful.
Not sure, but if you find out, I would like to know as well!  [message #4853 is a reply to message #4851] Sat, 05 October 2002 20:39 Go to previous messageGo to next message

If you have Outlook or such, right-click the spam email(s) and choose "properties". See if you can find the originating ISP that did the actual mailing of the spam. If you use Hotmail, you have to go to the settings page and find the "show full headers" (I think it's called 'expert user' option or somesuch).

If you can locate the ISP using whatever means you have at your disposal, then forward the whole thing (not just the message text, but headers, everything) to abuse@spamsendingisp.com. You could also try to contact the police of course (as this sounds like libel) but this is probably ineffective if the mail originates from abroad. You could always try anyway of course.

If it's from the US, forward it to the FBI. If it's anti-semitic, racist or hate-crime related or such, I'm sure they'll be interested in looking into the matter. Wink

Nice to hear from you again btw... Message me some day you're online and have a moment to spare, k? Smile

Try this:

http://www.mailwasher.net

It's a quick, easy and most efficient application for dealing with spam; it's also quite inexpensive (free if you choose it so); I've been using it for over a year, and find it simply fabulous.

Regarding, truly offensive e-Mail, if it contains content that is either "hate" or "juvenile" in nature, make a copy of the original, by selecting "view source/saveas" from one of the context-menus whith the actual e-Mail open on your computer, making sure to create the copy with an *.eml file extension; once the copy has been created, forward the original, with an attachment of the "copy" to the following address:

cp@interpol.int

If you reside in the United States, Canada or the United Kingdom, you may wish to send the a copy as well. Unfortunately you'll have to telephone a "local" office first, as none of the three offer a "published" e-Mail address with which to do so; this is sort of ironic in that all three have internet-related crime task-forces, and have published volumes of material about their activites, but discourage public dialogue on those very same activites, and contact.

Under the Spamcop reporting service (which is free), you forward the offending e-mail (with full headers enabled) to a special e-mail address which they give you when you register. Spamcop will locate the spammer's ISP and draft the abuse report on your behalf ready for you to send.

A benefit of doing it this way is that the report is drafted for you with your own (and anyone else's) e-mail address in the message blanked out, so you can submit it anonymously (but the recipient will know that your details are registered with Spamcop). Also coming from Spamcop it probably carries more clout, although I'm sceptical about how many ISP administrators take any notice.

Details of the service at http://spamcop.net
