Today, they have confimed that so far, 20 Australians lost their lives from the Bombings in Bali. I really dont know what is going on with the world. An approximation of 180 ppl feared dead is far too many.
I know it wasnt on Australian soil but, the geography isnt important. So many lives snuffed out because some cowards decided to escalate their petty ideas.
I send my symapthies to all the families feeling loss of friends and loved ones. No matter where they came from, they are united in death.

Ashley, as you have undoubtedly witnessed countless times by now in your young life, a human life, or 180, is a far less precious thing than it should be to some people.
To some of us, or most actually I hope, it is precious. To the rest, it's simply precarious.
There isn't anything we can do to stop these sort of things, all we can is help each other make our lives precious to one another.
Hug the ones you love as much as you can. Tell them how much they mean to you every day.
Take care!

Isn't this defeatist? Are you suggesting that we should sit back and let terror snuff out our lives one by one?
I, for one, think that every terror attack should have appropriate and measured retaliation.
I am not a war-monger, but I strongly believe that if wickedness is allowed to go unpunished we shall swiftly witness the "Decline and Fall of the West".

Since Sunday morning (12 hours ahead of New York's time zone) my colleagues and I have been swamped with emergency counselling work, prep for return of survivors and families and friends of those who have died. Many people living in Hong Kong were in Bali that week-end for regional football and rugby contests. More than 10 fatalities among them. Many of the remains are having to be identified by dental records, and some of the missing will not be found.
My colleagues and I are finding the pain similar to 9/11...this is the biggest terrorist attack outside of Pakistan/India since 9/11.
We aren't waiting for people to find our office, of course, we're doing groups and large meetings for the hundreds who have been affected here. One of the dead was a beloved teacher, and we're having to provide services to that whole school---students and staff alike.
People are being magnificent in the face of this adversity. Something Steve knows about as well, I suspect, from his part of the world.
People here aren't really talking about being angry yet. That will come later as the shock wears off and the funerals end...
Man and I love Bali. It's our favorite place on Earth outside our own garden walls. Such peace and serenity and lush landscape and wonderful people, who are mostly Hindu. But it won't be spoiled forever....
Ironically, Bali was conquered by the invading Indonesian army less than 40 years ago, tens of thousands of Balinese were slaughtered.
Peace will come again. We must hope for that.

Defeatist? How?
I don't know how to stop these people from carrying out their bloody deeds. You don't know. Nobody knows. Facts are, if they want to, they will. And they want.
You propose 'measured retaliation'. Against WHOM? How do you propose to retaliate without risking innocent lives?
The US 'war on terror' in Afghanistan has undoubtedly caused far more deaths amongst the civilian Afghan population, than those that perished in the 11/7 attacks.
I'm not proposing "wickedness" to go unpunished either, but there has to be an identifiable target, and we shall act within the framework of our laws. The current US tactics of an eye for an eye (or more like three eyes for an eye) only breeds further hatred, especially since suspects are being denied virtually all human rights, have no right to appeal, etc.
But I fear I am digressing. Send me an email if you wish to discuss this further, I feel it's inappropriate to go any further in this thread.

Since the beginning of time man has found a way to kill his fellow man. Terrorism, in its purist form, cannot be avenged with generating more terrorism. That is not to say that it should not be avenged. But what must be attacked are the false beliefs that lead people to commit these atrocious acts.
If you have been personnaly touched by one of the multitude of recent tragedies, my deepest sympathy and prayers go out to you. The death of a loved one, or even an acquaintance, is deeply felt no matter what the circumstances of their death. And acts such as these I can only accept as much as I would accept death from car crashes, plane crashes, and criminal violence, accept as a random act that makes no sense now, but depending on your belief, will some time in the future.
I have lost friends to war, crashes, terrorism, natural disasters, and illness. None are easy, but all I can do is remember who they were, and keep them in my heart always.
Hugs, Charlie

No, we weren't really CLOSE friends, but we knew each other. He was in the same year as me, different class. We were in the same swimming team, roleplayed together etc. Been out of touch for the last twelve, thirteen years or so, but I still knew him once...
His girl was apparantly a good and caring woman, and they wanted to settle and have children. Now it looks like that will never happen. She's still "only" reported as 'missing' as far as I know, but it's been days now and no sign of her anywhere, not on any of the hospitals...

It is terrible that happened and I am sure the loss will be acutely felt by him for a long time. I hope that she is among the many that at present cant be identified? There is still hope until concrete evidence is found to the contrary.
Hugs to all who have been touched by this tragedy.

I am afraid most people don't want to hear my ranting.
I do have very strong opinions about this.
Just hope you get through it OK.
Best wishes,

You know, sometimes a rant is called for. But I don't think I have ever seen a REAL rant from you.
I think what happens here is that people see that this board is not really a place for what one might term "generic politcs". We come here for lighter stuff than terrorism, Bush's poodle Blair, etc etc etc. So what happens is that threads which would have a huge debate on a political board have a short life here.
I think if this place turned into a political soapbox with themes that are not orientation slanted, we would all leave, one by one, for that is not why any of us arrived. I would not feel happy maintaining such a board.

All I did was to report somthing that I found sad. I didnt look for anyone to give of themselves in a Political manner nor did I broach the subject of WHY??
Akk I said was it was sad. I just feel for the lost loved one's families and friends. No matter how anyone dies or the reasons, it is still sad.
PS Kevin, I dont think you would say anything bad anyway, you are a nice guy.

Timmy ...
Discrimination, violence, social injustice, downright hatred. These issues, primarily against gays, but NOT exclusive to that group are some of the things I am most passionate about.
Sometimes I see the solution to some of these things as overall policy changes in Governments. So it tends to sound political. I believe that Government does not need to allow these things to continue. So if folks don't like the political slant to my rant, ** ** so to speak, I am sorry. It's just how I feel. We cannot individually stop these things in the world, community organizations and governments can. At least that's what I think. And what I feel.
Again, sorry for the soapbox all.
Ashley .....
First off, Thanks. And a HUGE HUG!
This is not your fault, if anything it is me. I think terrorist groups are all horrible. It is the roots of their hatred that may be political in my view. This does not justify violence, nothing can.
Killing in the name of God is the worst thing man has ever done, in my opinion. It has been done a lot over the years. Killing because of oppression is no better, but has some culpability to the oppressor. I hope we learn to stop all killing, we can be so much better than that.
My heart goes out to you, and the families of the victims.
Be well my friend.
