Friday night we all went to a Pflag meeting. It was ok and we sat around and talked about what is going on in my school and introduse ourselves. There were about 50 people there and there was even two other kids about my age there. When we all took a break for coffee and pop we got a chance to talk. It was kind of wierd though because I kind of didnt know what to say to them.
I dont know why I was so nervous but I was. My mom kept looking at me all the time I was with them and that made me feel funny too. They were Joey and William and they were real nice and I gave them my email address and I got theirs too. William said he hates it when people call him billy or will and he was real nice too we sat down and William even sat next to me too. I thought my moms eyes would pop out of her head when he sat right next to me. Joey was nice too.
When the meeting sterted back up we just kind of sat around and talked about some party they were going to have soon. William had to go back with his parents and I went back and sat with mine. All the time for the rest of the meeting I kept looking at William and he kept smiling at me.
Saturday morning there was a long email from William to me. I cant say what he said because he asked me not to say anything about it. He gave me his AIM id and we talked almost all day saturday online.
William is real nice.

Hi Drew,
I'm very happy that there was a meeting of PFLAG near you! It's a terrific organization, for sure. Your parents seem as brave and determined as you are yourself.
And good for you that you and William are getting to know each other.

Glad you made a new friend, Andy! Now you have someone you can talk to and share things with.
I had not previously heard about PFLAG (Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays), so I checked out their website. It contains some useful resources and advice and FAQs.
The web addresses are as follows:

Canada: http://www.pflag.ca

You have had a great experience with parents you knew were likely to be supportive. You have an organisation they are willing to visit to learn about the extra information they have about the son they love.
We know that not all parents will react well, and you as well as others know that not all kids (of whatever age - I was 46 or so!) will dare to tell their parents. How do we help those people, the ones who aren't able to talk, for whatever reason?
Does your Pflag group have any advice for this section of our friends? What do we say to someone who says "I do not dare tell my parents" (for any reason at all, ranging from fear of being thrown out all the way to relogious intolerance, or sometimes even physcial harm)?
I'm asking you because you now have the links to a decent Pflag group. I'm asking others as well. This is a complex and very individual topic

PFLAG has produced a pamphlet called "Be Yourself: Questions and Answers for Gay, Lesbian and Transgender Youth". You can read this online at:
http://www.pflag.org/publications/BeYourself.PDF
There's a section on page 7 which addresses the questions "Should I come out?" and "Who should I tell?".
There is also book called "Read This Before Coming Out to Your Parents", by Tom Sauerman price $1.50, which you can order here:

Great leaflet. Looks dull enough to give to a parent, doesn't it?
Wait! I am a parent. There must be a better way! I think the site is great. I just wish it was more, well, fun!
Now I am not being sarcastic. Pflag is good. WE are better, though, here.

It's always good to hear that things are working out. I wish I had something like PFLAG when I was in school.
Think good thoughts,
