I was at the mall before Christmas with my friends. We had been to the movies and grabbed stuff to eat and were just generally being silly. You know me well enough, I hope, to know that I wouldn't ever hurt anyone. Something happened that made me see life from the other side.........
We were sitting around just watching people go by, doing what we always do, making up stories about who they are, totally outrageous stuff...six boys, three white, two hispanic and one black.....best of friends. Anyway, an elderly lady walked by and her packages were falling. I jumped up and went over to help her but when I got there, she whacked me away with her purse. When she looked at me, I actually saw fear in her eyes. She told me to get away before she called the police. I backed off and watched as she picked up her stuff and practically ran away. People were looking at me as if I had tried to rob her.
I understand but it hurt all the same. We tried to make a joke out of it but it bothered all of us. I have a hard time getting past the look in her eyes. She didn't see 6 boys, did she? She saw a gang of what????? I have a grandmom that I love so much; we all do. No answer, I know. Just thought I'd share this. Next time you're out, really look at the people around you; kids, grownups, elderly people.......is everyone afraid of what they don't know?

Hey smith, dont be too over analytical about it mate. It seems to be normal that people view young guys as potential muggers and rapists. It is a lil like gay guys are viewed as potential paedophiles and stuff. I walk down the street sometimes behind a woman and 90% of the time they will cross the street away from you or they will keep looking over their shoulders at you Sad I know. But it is the norm.
But, dont forget, that not ALL people react the same way and a lot still do say thanx for the assist and some even smile back at YOU when they pass you. The world will only become nasty when we all forget how to smile or do nice things. Hugs for you smith for caring as much as you do. Shows the world hasnt degenerated into the endless abyss..
People have a habit of changing your direction through life

Her reaction is merely a byproduct of today's society. There are more than enough muggers and thieves out there and not nearly enough kind and considerate people. Don't let her reaction deter your kind and generous behavior. But do be aware that it won't always be appreciated or even desired. Some people have been victimized in the past and may frighten rather easily. I've found that it is often best to ask a person if the need help before giving it. About the only time I don't ask is when I'm entering or exiting a building and can hold a door open. I've never had a person react poorly to that.
Think good thoughts,

If you could leave your door unlocked when you went out.....
Or to be able to send the kids to the movies without the fear they will be seeing one heinous act or another.....
But in as much as the world has changed for the better, our society has not.
It's sad when a boy scout cant do his good dead for the day without being accused of a crime.
Life is great for me... Most of the time... But then I meet people online... Very few are real friends... Many say they are but know nothing of what it means... Some say they are, but are so shallow...
