Yesterday, on our way back home from work Kevy and I decided to stop off and check out whats new at the Salvation Army Store (one of our favorits places for procuring kewel and CHEAP stuff). Well we walk in and peruse the houseware department and having found not a thing of use or value we meandered to the Furniture area. Right away I spotted a pile of oak table tops and leaves (both sets were only $50.00) and Kevy began thumbing through them to check their condition. They were in wonderful condition but both were without their pedistals. I said we couldnt really use just table tops so we headed home.
Once outside the store though I thought of calling a store in the next town that specializes in oak furniture and asked if they could possibly replace them.
THEY SAID YES!!!!!!!!!!!
All we had to do was bring in a leave so we could match the finish. YYYYYYYAAAAAAYYYYYY
WE throw our coats back on and dash off back to the sotre to get our prise. Alas as we rounded the corner a miscreant shopper was standing there actually touching our treasure. Carressing them with all the expertise of an experienced Salvation Armier.
Right away we spring into action. I headed to the cashier and promptly had her ring up my sale as Kevy ran out to bring the van to the loading area.
Just as I was signing the slip the man arrived and inquired about the two tables.
Kevy was so happy..... He has transformed into......... (ominous music) "Decorating Man"
Now we have a nice table to match our buffet and hutch (another great find) for only $25.00 plus the cost of a pedistal and we hope to recoup the cost for all that by selling the second table.
Life is great for me... Most of the time... But then I meet people online... Very few are real friends... Many say they are but know nothing of what it means... Some say they are, but are so shallow...

You'll appreciate this story then.....After my grandpa passed on, we were cleaning the barn and under a ton of old dry hay in the furtherest corner, we found a round top oak table with the pedastal. My Mama fell upon it like it was gold. It's all
refinished and lives in our house. There were initials carved in it and she left them......it's a way cool table and belonged to my great grandparents.
Congratulations on your "find"

You know I love you and Kevy *hugs* and I love shopping at thrift stores prolly more than most (as you know!) BUT PUUULEEEEEEEZEEE, NOT THE SALVATION ARMY!! haha! Please, shop anywhere else but there. I know they have good stuff at good prices, but their homophobic employee policies should be boycotted, don't you agree? I mean, every time I see one of those bell ringing Santas with the red kettle, I just go ballistic! So, if there are alternative thrift stores in your area, I urge you gently, to patronize them, and shun the Salvation Army if at all possible.
And if anyone wants to learn more about my reasons for making this request, I will be happy to discuss it with you, either by e-mail at xcrzypunx@hotmail.com or here on the board (but only with Tim's permission).
*hugs*
BTW - I asked Sergio to post the article for you, Marc.

We all would be very cold, hungry and naked, with nothing comfy to sit on nor anything to cook our food in.
Sometimes,,,, Going out into the world means that we have to deal with people like this.
Hopefully, every time we see our friends and I do mean friends at the S.A. thrift store we reinforce the notion that we, the two gay guys that come in every week are every bit as nice and good and "normal" as anyone else.
I know it is nice to be young, with high ideals. The world needs avatars also. But the real world has to be dealt with if we are going to survive. (by survive, I mean just that, Eat, buy clothing, find housing, have a bed to rest on.)
Life is great for me... Most of the time... But then I meet people online... Very few are real friends... Many say they are but know nothing of what it means... Some say they are, but are so shallow...

In the UK the company "Stagecoach" is violently and publicly homophobic (allegedly!) If you read my pages on Section 28 you will see the incalcluable harm they have done to british youth.
BUT when I need a bus and they are the only operator, I have to pay them money

I'm just now reading your reply (I haven't been on line much) and of course I highly respect you and and value your opinion and treasure your friendship. *hugs* I would never intentionally say or do anything to make you upset with me, marc.
smooches.
If I may explain without causing any hurt feelings from anyone - because I don't want to hurt ANYONE'S feelings.
I may be young and idealistic but I don't think that has anything to do with not supporting anti-gay organizations. I just refuse to spend my hard earned money to support an organization or corporation that fires it's gay employees simply because they are gay.
Now I realize that there are nice individuals working within homophobic organizations/corporations, and I would never confront an employee about corporate policies because they have no influence over corporate policies. I'm sure most of them are very nice people and that some of them are gay. And I also totally agree that you and Kevy, by being out and such sweet people, are doing a lot to show straight people everyday that a gay couple is just as nice and normal as anyone else. But corporations only care when it comes to the bottom line. They listen when it starts to affect their profits.
I'm nice to the Salvation Army's employees (like bell ringers) but I still don't give them my money because it is used to hire lobbyists that influence our politicians to promote anti-gay LAWS in Washington D.C. by a company that fires its own gay employees whenever legally allowed to do so. In fact, they wanted the president of the United States to give them a special exemption from ALL state and local non-discrimination laws, so they could fire ALL of their gay employess in the entire United States. That's a well documented fact.
I just assumed that you were unaware of the S.A.'s anti-gay policies. I find it a little ironic that you might knowingly financially support such an openly anti-gay organization given the fact that you have been a victim of discrimination, being fired and also being evicted from your apartment, just for being gay. At the time, you were very upset and I was ready and willing to go there and rip the place apart if you said the word because you are a dear sweet person to me and it pisses me off that anyone would be mean to you. (Still does! My offer still stands!)
I imagine most gay employees who are fired by the Salvation Army probably feel pretty upset as well and that pisses me off too.
But that's enough about the salvation army.
BTW I found a consignment shop where I just bought a bed and a huge retro tourquoise naugahyde recliner. It has extended front arms so it looks very aerodynamic and looks like it could have been a pice of space age furniture in a Jetson's cartoon! haha! I LOVE IT! only $60 and it's mint! It would have cost easy over $600 at a trendy retro store. YES! I now have an apartment! yayyyyyyy! My producer and I just found an apartment and moved in a couple weeks ago. It's sooooo awesome! You can read all about it here
http://www.voy.com/12478/1/21847.html if you want! I am sooooooo proud of it and happy about it! HAHA! Now I get to decorate too! I'm still in school so it's pretty sweet having an apartment!
Anyway....In the meantime...for anyone who is interested in a little passive, non-confrontational activism, you might want to consider boycotting ExxonMobil and ConocoPhillips when you fill up your gas tank because both companies discontinued non-discrimination policies covering sexual orientation and closed Mobil's domestic partner benefits program to any future employees.
The GLBT "community" is a sizable chunk of the worldwide economy. Corporations should be made aware that when they single out gays, we won't buy their products.
I hope most GLBT and gay friendly people will not fund discrimination whenever they can choose a gay friendly product. That's all I'm saying. Money talks.
