To all Members of this Message Board ...

... should you receive an e_mail purporting to originate from this address:

"pacman2@bright.net" warning about the KLEZ e-Mail Virus, kindly delete the message immediately.

DO NOT attempt to open the "attachment", nor select the suggested option "Continue".

The worm has struck again, and is reading Outlook Express "Address Books" resident on user's computers and propigating itself in this manner.

I strongly suggest that all Member's here, abandon their use of Outlook (Express), or any Microsoft authored e-Mail/Newsgroup reader, in favour of a W3.ORG standards compliant client. Eurdora, Lotus Notes/Mail/cc:Mail/Domino, QuickMail, Netscape, and others all are compliant, none of which will allow the opening of attachments without your intervention, and their having to be saved to the hard-disk of your computer first.

Thanks for the warning, Warren.

I just "deep six" any e-mail that contains "KLEZ" in the subject line.

Also beware of e-mails which seem to be from somebody you know but actually aren't. For example, if you regularly communicate with "MickyMouse@Disney.com", then that whole address (name@server) should appear in the "From" column on any e-mail you receive from that person; if the "From" column simply contains the name (in this case, "MickyMouse") without a server, then in all likelihood it's bogus and should be treated as such. One way to avoid any questions about this would be for you and your correspondent to agree on a password only you and that person would know, and include that password in the subject line. As this person will recall, this has already happened between me and one of you (the message of which had me telling him that I had pictures of me and my girlfriend that I wanted to show him; since he knows me too well to know that I never had and probably will never have a girlfriend, he smelled a rat and sent me a separate e-mail asking me about that).

As for the viruses: again, obviously, some people need to get a life!

Thanks Ron, I never thought about the other signs to look for. I'm trying to find the problem now.

Thanks Warren for informing me of this problem.

Doesn't mean X's computer even has the virus. These often pick an address out of the address book and make that their "from" address. So, it's more likely Brian's friend that's infected, not Brian himself. Antivirus software! Updated signatures!

But, if you look at the "full message header" maybe you can compare to friends' "real" message headers (ip address, ISP) for a clue as to who is infected.

I have an email address I have never used from a PC. It runs from a unix mail server and responds automatically to inbound messages. It can not be infected by a virus of the KLEZ nature. Howver I often get emails purporting to be from that address (mine!) which contain viruses.

Anyone getting bent out of shape over viruses should simply learn to ignore them and to delete them. It is no big deal. It's like being in the same room as someone who sneezes, is receiving a virus.

... regardless of the e-Mail client that you may use, and whether that application is w3.org compliant or not, I strongly suggest that each of you download and install "MailWasher", which may be found here:

http://www.mailwasher.net/

I, for many years have used LotusDomino Server as my preferred e-Mail Host and Filtering application, but recently partially abandoned this in favour of the above mentioned application with regard to my filtering and previewing of all incoming e-Mail through the Host-server, which continues to be LotusDomino.

It works seemlessly and in conjunction with all e-Mail Hosts and Clients, allowing full preview, and screening of all incoming e-Mail according to parameters you establish on an on-going, and if you so desire, changing basis.

Simply a wonderful tool, which amongst all other considerations has proved to be a blessing in time savings alone when dealing with large volumes of e-Mail, and multiple e-mail accounts.

Well worth your consideration!
