I wrote a story a while ago, and included a part where one of the characters downloads and reads one of my favorite online stories, and some parts of the story are mentioned later. The story title is given… so is it necessary to get the authors permission to use the story title Etc., if I should ever decide to post my story somewhere?

An attempt to contact the author was unsuccessful.

Any comments?

I would say "In the header of your story, give full credit to the author of the quoited story and acknowledge his rights and copyright. State that an attempt to contact him for permission to quote his story was unsuccessful, and that you hope to hear form him if he has any concerns."

Under such circumstances I would have little cause to object were one of my own stories quoted, even as below.

In general, too, one may quote "limited passages" from another person's work without infirnging their copyright (and right to cash payment) as long as it is both obvious that the passages are quotes AND the copyright and source is acknowledged. Laws vary in different parts of the world

Thanks for the answer; if I ever get brave enough to post the story, or find a place that it fits, for that matter, I’ll give your suggestion a try.

I have a feeling that “McFly Syndrome” will probably win out though, and I’ll end up taking it to my grave.

It’s too bad none of the archives (to my knowledge at least) really preview submissions and tell the author in advance that their story is a joke or inappropriate. Oh well.

Thanks again,

Informed

At the risk of mentioning The Shack (smile, Tim, smile) there is a "Library" message board over there for sharing and soliciting comments/criticism. Be sure to explicitly ask for "real" comments up front, otherwise you might get lots of "that's great" overpoliteness. E-mail me if you need the link to The Library.

I'm just guessing, but also probably nobody here would mind if you plop it here and we'll pick it all to peices - er - give it loving, constructive criticism. Yeah, that's what I meant.

Why not choose someone here and ask one of us to have a look? Happy amateurs abound! DO submit it somehwere. You may be good, you may be crap, but until you open the kimono no-one wil ever know. Including you.

Probably because I have neevr posted a story there. Comicality's Shack out Back wil get you there.

Trevor is right about "Oceans of Politeness".

Another place is the yahoo group "Gay Dreamers Loft". In addition the Gay Writers Guild accepts AND critiques stories within its guidelines
