I went to a shop in Barnstaple the other day to buy new beds, as one does. It makes pine furniture to order. And there was the largest bed I've ever seen, a double-double, 9ft wide. 'Who on earth wants a bed that big?' I asked the salesman. 'Oh, we made that for a brothel up north'.
Well, apart from the images which that conjures up, the question arises why a northern brothel should patronise a small shop so far away. If you're not up with the geography of this little old island, Barnstaple's far in the south-west. Unless 'up north' is local parlance for a village a few miles out (which seems unlikely), it naturally means Lancashire or Yorkshire or beyond, at the very least 300 miles away.
One of life's mysteries I thought I'd share.
