I've been flat on my back for two days - recurring back problem, blasted operation hasn't worked 100% - and read all three volumes. Northern Lights, The Subtle Knife, The Amber Spyglass. Quite extraordinary. Hugely imaginative and inventive: some people compare him with Tolkien, and I'd agree, though the approach is very different. The background gloriously challenges conventional theology and the power of the church (shades of what people were saying in that thread about circumcision), and even God has a (utterly unexpected) bit part. The story's in no way gay, or barely, but it's rich in loyalty and love. It's ostensibly written for children (the hero and heroine are 12), but it's full of meaning for every age. Books are often called unputdownable. This one truly is. If you haven't read it, do. I was in tears.
