As I contemplated our recent discussions this afternoon I was reminded of a poem I wrote many years ago. It is not one of my finer poems nor is it one of the worst, but I think the message may be important for us to hear.
Sinking Ships
In the beginning…
Once upon a time…
There was a ship.
It was a big ship
And I…
Was the captain.
I was the captain of the ship.
Now this ship…
Was sinking.
It was a…
Sinking ship.
However…
It was not sinking…
In the ocean.
It was sinking…
In a small pond.
In fact…
It had already sunk.
I know this…
I know this because…
The bottom of the ship
Was touching the bottom of the pond.
The people on deck
Did not realize…
They did not realize…
That they were on…
A sunken ship
They thought…
They thought that they…
Were sailing.
They thought that they…
Were ok.
They thought that they were ok because…
The ship was very…
Large…
And the pond was very…
Shallow.
It was a very large ship
In a very shallow pond.
Have you ever wondered…
Have you ever wondered why…
Have you ever wondered why people
See things only one way…
When they have…
Two eyes?
Just something I thought those of us who have been involved in the recent disagreements should consider.
Think good thoughts,
