Kevin said that he would not contribute any further to a previous thread, so I have started a new one Wink in the hope that he will contribute to this one Smile

I think everyone would agree with this. Let's have some practical suggestions. No, smith, those ideas you got from that wanking site will NOT qualify Smile

How does one deal non-violently, but effectively, with evil, tyranny, terror tactics and so forth? In order to keep the discussion within the parameters of this MB maybe we could use effective treatment of violent homophobia as a starting point.

drarest sweetheart with tongue in cheek and with the earnest desire not to start another firestorm, I would suggest physical castration (just kidding) for any hate monger or homophobe, so they could not procreate producing more of their ilk. hehehe

Well, lessee, going to speak in totally general terms here, this applies for groups, individuals and nations... I think whilst you need to try and educate people you still need to respect their freedom to act as they wish. If they are using their freedom to take away the freedom of others, then it is your responsibility to point out that it is wrong, and why and also to educate the oppressed as to how they can break the control the person has over them. If the oppressor doesn't wish to listen, then that is their choice, they will reap what they sow, and if the person being oppressed doesn't assert themselves, then again, if you have provided them with the knowledge of how to end the cycle, then it is no longer your responsibility.

Applying this to a school situation, if someone is being bullied and you as an outside party find out, it is your responsibility to discuss the issue with the bully, to inform them why what they are doing is wrong (provided it is safe for you to do so). Then, once you've talked to the bully, talk to the person being bullied to dicuss solutions for them to overcome the problem. Perhaps all they need to do is stand up to the bully, so the bully no longer sees them as an easy target. If you interfere and beat up the bully yourself, it only makes him rebellious and more like to pick on the bullied, again.

Applying it to the situation with Iraq (something I'm not claiming to be an expert on, but I'm quite happy to remain ignorant as I don't plan on going into politics, so really have no reason to take an interest in pointless political debate), America and the UN have talked to Iraq for years, so obviously that isn't an option. The next step should be giving the people of Iraq the means to take back their country themselves, help them establish a democratic nation from within. I think most people would have to agree that an organised Civil War within Iraq would be far better than another World War. Again, I don't know a lot, but I think that would be a prefered option.
An interesting, if drastic concept...!  [message #7868 is a reply to message #7846] Wed, 19 February 2003 14:31 Go to previous messageGo to next message

Unfortunately, views and opinions are not GENETICALLY inherited, so that would not work... Though I have some small belief that castration as a punishment for hate-crimes would work as a deterrent if the assailant knew he'd risk losing his nuts if caught.

However, mutilation for ANY crime is a horrendously barbaric form of punishment (the only kind I'd really consider it for would be repeat rape offenders, and even that would most likely not stop them from doing it again), and quite unacceptable in a modern society.

There's not one easy solution to this problem. Many homophobes are probably picking on gays simply because they're an easy, convenient target. The bully himself might have no particular views on homosexuality itself, he just sees the gay as a defenseless victim, an easy target. These people would be 'cured' by the same treatment that fixes other forms of bullying.

Other people either use Darwin (in a way), or the bible or other religious texts as foundation for their belief, and can't be swayed with the same approach as the situation above.

Finding one common solution to an issue as complex as this one is impossible. Of course, educating people to show them gays aren't monsters or freaks is very important and will go a long way, but it won't be the be-all, end-all cure.
