"Officially the purpose of high schools is to teach kids. In fact their primary purpose is to keep kids all locked up in one place for a big chunk of the day so adults can get things done in this specialized industrial society.
The most important thing is to stay on the premises. While there, the authorities feed you, prevent overt violence, and make some effort to teach you something. But, beyond that, the wardens don't have much to do with the inmates and, left to their own devices, they create a Lord of the Flies world."
