What was the name of the dog that Melvin Udall was taking care of, in what movie, and why?
And who decided to spend the night on a good friend's couch rather than face the prospect of a masturbating Welshman at home?
And, for special Geezer bonus points...who was Errol Flynn's co-star in "The Sea Hawks"? And was she the same co-star that played opposite him in the original "Robin Hood"?

1. Verdelle

3. Olivia DeHaveland I think
Who layed the "brother" in the African Queen?
Who played the "revolutionary" role in Fiddler on the Roof
and what cop show did he co-star in?
Life is great for me... Most of the time... But then I meet people online... Very few are real friends... Many say they are but know nothing of what it means... Some say they are, but are so shallow...

And Marc, you surprised me. You got Olivia Dehavilland correct from 1940, but missed Hugh Grant playing William Thacker in "Notting Hill"?! Huh...
Well, maybe you're like me...us Geezers have better long-term memory than we do for more recent events...

Ah! You like the swash-bucklers. Me, too. "Captain Blood". And what was that Viking movie with Kirk Douglas when he was young and handsome? Oh, yeah..."The Long Ships". And the westerns..."They Died With Their Boots On" and "The Alamo". And the musicals..."Calamity Jane" with Doris Day (and wasn't she a lesbian for days?).
Tonight I'm watching a double header. "Son of the Morning Star" about Custer's last stand. It was a 5 hour mini-series on TV back in the late 80's.
Well, I gotta do something to stay un-bored during the public health crisis around here. Better a couch potato than sick with the SARS virus!

Hey, some of us old timers like those campy sci-fi movies. What else can make you doubt the integrity of cinema and at the same time laugh at hollywood for allowing such crap to drain money from really important, controversial and tense political thrillers like Notting Hill. >snicker< Only teasing, guys!
Besides, if it wasn't for campy (and admittedly crappy) sci-fi, we'd have nothing to base our high opinion of Independance Day or any given Schwartzenager film on, now would we?

And we loved to boo the evil meanie Dr. Smith as he slithered his way thru the galaxy on "Lost in Space".
Hey, D'Art...
Which of those wonderfully awful campy old sci-fi movies do you remember best? I liked 'em, too!

At least with the way they had him made up for Babylon 5.
Two of the very first movies that I called my favorites were "The Vikings" (bought it on DVD a couple months ago) and one of those campy sci-fis, "Robinson Crusoe on Mars."
Think good thoughts,

...But Forbidden Planet was THE best old sci-fi movie of that era, with the not very camp The Day the Earth Stood Still as a runner-up.
Forbidden Planet totally kicks butt though, and Leslie Nielsen did really well in that one as the flying saucer captain, it was while he still was a serious actor and not doing Stupid(TM) so-called "comedy" movies.
I want Forbidden Planet on DVD, it is THAT good.
Of course, Tron is an excellent sci-fi too, though that one was made in the eighties. They wore really nice tights in the computer world. Ram in particular was a really good-looking young man, he had a great butt! (I actually frame-by-framed him a couple times, hehe! )
Also, Jeff Bridges looked great without a T-shirt on...

well, let's see, I really liked this one show that appeared all too briefly in the late 70's, actually two from that time, now that I think of it. Buck Rodgers in the 25th Century was the second, but my greater guilty pleasure was Battlestar: Galactica. I liked the fact that it was all about fighter pilots. And that the bad guys had cooler looking ships than the TIE Fighters from Star Wars.

Well, the ultimate in Sci Fi camp was Space Balls, although I gotta tip my hat to two others that have their own relative merits. Explorers was a late 80's vehicle for River Phoenix and Ethan Hawke, before they grew up. There was also this classic down and outer film staring Rowdy Roddy Piper called They Live, sort of an alien invasion movie with a subtle twist. Also, who can forget how great we all thought the multiple miniseries "V" from the early 80's was and how crappy it all looks now. Ah memories.....and how cheated I feel by them.
hehehehehe

I believe it was.... "God bless the beasts and the children"
It was about a summer came located out west somewhere....
It featured all the teen aged kid stars of the time and there were several near naked scenes in it..... One or two were even wet underwear scenes.....
Oh my.....
But anyway.... it was a pretty good movie and I wish I could find a copy of it today....

Marc, I've just dug thru one of my cabinets stuffed with old videos...getting ready to pack them up to move back to Thailand.
I'm looking at the box cover of my copy of this terrific movie (altho it's also a bit sad, too, in parts). 1971, Columbia Pictures, Stanley Kramer Production. Theme song became a classic sung by Karen Carpenter, starred Billy Mumy as a teenager as well as several other cute bois.
Great "male bonding in the face of adversity" story...takes place at a summer camp designed to make "men" out of "wimps and geeks". The stars are the kids who were cast out of other cabins and forced to get themselves together. One of them very effectively played an effeminate teen who finds reserves of courage in himself that made me cry. Some of the scenes flashing back to problems in these boys' families are chilling.
As a closeted freshman in University that year, with a secret crush on my "athlete god" room-mate who enjoyed being undressed most of the time (just to torture me, it seemed at the time...) I identified fiercely with those poor guys.
You should be able to order it from Amazon, even if you might have to ask them to look for a used copy...Mine didn't cost more than $5-$10, I'm sure, altho I have no idea when or where I actually bought it.
And D'Artagnon, I also found my old video of the entire "V" series, which I illegally taped off the TV. You're right, it's not as terrific now as it is in memory. Still fun, tho, with the evil lady commander extending her jaw to eat the nice little canary bird for lunch. hehe

If you liked that blast from the past, how'd you like ther recent movie edition of Lost in Space. The robot was much cooler than the old bubble dome one with the rubber hose arms from the series. I also ran across an interesting and disturbing part of my video collection. A 1980 film about rogue telepaths that takes a severe horror movie left turn. It was called Scanners and the only real star in the film was the bad guy, played by Michael Ironsides. Fair warning, it gets gooey at points, should you track it down. Real edge of the seat stuff.

And I am sooooooooo jealous.... LOL
I will begin looking for it right away. I was not too sure of the title but now I am..... Thanks loads....
The effeminate boy... YES... and blonde to boot if my memory serves...
You're right about it being a little sad in places too... As I remember it was very cliquish too.... One cabin competing against another for some sort of useless trophy to prove not too much at all.....
It ended kind of on a down note as well.... If I remember correctly.
It made me cry as well......
