Last night, after about 1,000 hours of eye burning work I finished all the input for the listing of "Prefered Movies" and as I pressed the last.... Yes final save on the file my hard drive seems to have crashed....
Now I am talking about a comprehensive, alphetical catalogue of film with over 500 main entries.... Plus it delves even deeper with sub-categories which include links to biographical information on all the directors, writers and cast of every film.
We are talking literally 10,000 links
Plus the movies include ratings certifications from all applicable countries. Links to information sites reguarding filming techniques, language and alternate releaces in countries other than the country of origin.
............SIGH......................
Now........ If my inhouse technowizzard can not resolve this situation I am asking..... nay.... pleading.... awwwwww..... BEGGING to know if there is anyone out there with the expertise to retrieve the data on my hard drive??????????
I know this may seem trivial.... But it is something that I have been quietly working on for four years....
Please......
Life is great for me... Most of the time... But then I meet people online... Very few are real friends... Many say they are but know nothing of what it means... Some say they are, but are so shallow...

so far I've got " Well, I don't know the problem exactly, but unless the actual Hard Drive has died totally (not working does not mean dead), then there is always a way to retrieve past data (even though I don't know a lot of techniques), just sometimes it may not be worth the hassel (though in this case it does seem pretty important).
You see, when data is deleted from a Hard Drive it is never really delete, Windows just marks that part of the Hard Drive as being "free" even though in reality it still contains all the old data. So, unless you totally fill up the hard drive, the old data will be on there somewhere and ready for you to access.... However, when a file is saved over an old file it usually takes up the same part of the hard drive that it previously existed on, instead of looking for "unused space" first.
Basically you may be lucky and able to retrieve, I don't know the exact nature of the problem and I'm not expert enough to know what to suggest. If it is that important you may want to take it to a computer experts or visit some techie computer forums and see if they can work it out. Basically, there is a chance things will be okay, but it just depends on what the problem is exactly...
Hmm... relooking at the original post it seems it is just one file that is corrupt and I was going too deep into too serious of a problem, like a HDD crash. Nonetheless it is possible you can retrieve it but still I'm not sure....
Look at this tree. I cannot make it blossom when it suits me nor make it bear fruit before its time [...] No matter what you do, that seed will grow to be a peach tree. You may wish for an apple or an orange, but you will get a peach.

If it's a database and a data file is corrupt, there are often recovery tools. There are some simple tools that will retrieve the text portions of any data file - takes seconds - but that would be unformatted text to be rekeyed or major formatting project.
If the physical drive is truly dead, there are "data recovery" specialists you can send it to. They do things like pull the board out of the mechanical/media part and replace the electronics, (I've done this) or (worst case)put the data platters (media) onto an equivalent drive if the motor or voice coil is shot. Pricy, though - had to do it once. I think Ontrack still does this, but you can google or look in the yellow pages.
Last time that happened on my home machine, I had about 10 years of stuff - taxes, program source code I'd written, phone numbers, etc - and found I could read the drive for about 30 seconds after spinup before it became unreadable (overheating, I think.) So, I booted in DOS with a switch jury-rigged to the power pins on the drive and used XCOPY to move files to another drive until I got "Abort, Retry, Ignore" and would then cycle power at that point and Retry until it went away again. It took about 15 hours of flipping that switch off for a few seconds, then back on until it died, but it was worth it in the end. Now I have a CD burner to at least backup the data files once in awhile.
Good luck, Marc! Sorry, I don't know squat about movies. I jokingly told my friend the other day I'd watched 6 movies. He said this month or this week. I said EVER! But, he could actually remember watching at least 4 with me over a 25 year period.

Get the free evaluation version of NORTON UTILITIES and see what it can find among your deleted files. It needs to search the "free space". I had some luck with this when I lost a load of files. Takes head scratching and quiet patience. The files are text files, so when you find the,m you need to convert the extension from .txt

But someone is going to look at it tonight.... He said that it just might be a loose connection...
I hope he is right....
