So, I am in danger of only thinking and talking about just ONE topic these days...

To avoid that...

I was thinking the other day about how little I really know about the Internet.

Like...was it invented?

Or was it discovered, like the New World by the Vikings and Columbus?

I mean, is it something that existed that we had to find, or did we make it up?

Or is this a dumb question?

David, you KNEW I'd go look it up Smile

In 1957, the USSR launched Sputnik and the USA formed ARPA (Advanced Research Projects Agency) under the DoD (Department of Defense).

In 1962, the RAND Corporation was commissioned by the US Air Force to do a study on how it could maintain its command and control over missiles and bombers after a nuclear attack...how all cities in the US could stay in contect.

In 1968, the first connection was made between University of California in Los Angeles, SRI in Stanford, University of California at Santa Barbara and University of Utah. The network was wired together via 50 Kbps circuits.

In 1972, the first e-mail program was created by Ray Tomlinson of BBN. He chose the @ to read 'at'.

In 1972, first computer to computer "chat" at UCLA.

In 1985, Symbolics.com became the first registered domain.

In 1990, the world came on-line.

In 1991, www. was introduced.

In 1992, the term "surfing the net" was coined.

In 1994, the first banner ads appeared.

In 2002, smith posted a message and talked to people in England, Finland, USA, Wales, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and who knows where else. Cool, huh !!!

***Give me a little time and I'll find other notable dates like the first virus, the first pop-up ad, the first porn site >>>>hahahaha<<<<

During the 2000 US Presidential election, the Republicans made much political hay over their assertion that Democratic candidate Al Gore claimed to have invented the Internet (an assertion they naturally have never been able to verify). It always reminds me of their other great assertion that Ronald Reagan single-handedly brought down the Soviet Union by standing in front of the Berlin Wall and saying, "Mr. Gorbachov, tear down this wall."

I don't know who actually "invented" the Internet (although something tells me more than one person was involved, just as more than one person was involved in the dissolution of the Soviet Union). One thing I do know, however, is that in no way have I "had my fill" of your "countdown to Thailand", David (in fact, like I'm sure everybody else is, I'm counting down right along with you!).

May the time remaining go by in a flash!

You must first understand WHAT the internet exactly is, or isn't. I mean, the internet isn't anything physical, you can't touch it, really more than a "thing" it is a "process". The internet is the name given to a system that allows computers all across the world to communicate. Computers have been communicating for years, probably since the 60s back in the day when computers were the size of a large hall and barely capable of performing basic arithmatic. It is hard to place a date on something like the internet, because it wasn't a Eureka type deal, it wasn't just discovered or invented one day, it was a process of research, increased learning and pushing the boundaries of technology.

So what about the WWW? There are many different ways of sending information between computers, these ways of sending information are called "protocols", one of these protocols is called "HTTP" (short for Hypertext Transfer Protocol). HTTP is what allows your computer to ask for information and then be sent that information by another computer (where the information is stored) your web browser (Internet Explorer for example) then interprets the information it was sent to contain colours, text, images, etc and outputs it to the screen.

Well, that's a brief rundown, but it's sort of hard to explain, I need to be able to stop somewhere because if I kept going one thing would lead to another and soon this'd be like a 50 page essay about how computers function Razz

THis info is soo basic that I would have been embarressed to ask before. After all, I only got my first computer 6 years ago when I moved to Hong Kong...

OK, Mr. Find It Guy...see if you can really find the very FIRST porn site. That would be very cool to see, indeed, altho it is probably long gone.

The first banner ad? *Shudders*

And the first spam...

Al Gore DID claim to have invented the internet - AS A JOKE. He did it on the Tonight Show I believe, he was quite funny that evening (not at all the robot he was usually portrayed as in the talkshow host monologs of the period), and then people took the joke out of context and made it look like he'd actually been serious when he said it...

As for that RR quote, I don't understand how that would have been possible, wasn't Bush Sr. in office at the time of the collapse?

I don't think any ONE person can claim to have invented the net, as it's really an amalgam of all kinds of networks; copper lines, fibreoptics, even satellite links.

One guy CAN lay claim to have invented the TCP/IP protocol that routes around packets of information on the internet however... I read some interview with him a while back, maybe a year or two. I can't remember his name though.

You see, Lenny, that's what's so typical of the fascist right wing (at least here in the United States). They'll take something about their opponenets that's not true (for example, something said in jest, like this), convince their followers that it's true, and use it against their opponents; and yet (again) these are the same people who want the Ten Commandments (including the one saying "Thou shallt not bear false witness against thy neighbor") posted in every school room and on every telephone poll in the United States. And they are also the same people who would want to see sites and message boards like this one banned (and again, these are the same people who say there should be less government intrusion in the lives of the people).

Yes, "Papa Bush" was already in office when the Soviet Union collapsed; but he and the rest of his party give their "guru" Ronny Rayguns all the credit for single-handedly bringing down "The Evil Empire" (and their "mouthpieces" who dominate the airwaves in the United States constantly remind the people of that).

Now questions are arising as to whether "Baby Bush" lied about the existence of his stated reasons for going to war against Iraq. Funny: the same people who impeached Bill Clinton for having an extra-marital affair (or two) now don't think that subverting the Constitution and lying to the people about reasons for going to war are impeachable offenses. This was all brought up on a newscast I just watched (along side recent video footage of a 14 year old Iraqi boy with an American bullet in his back).

Again, I quote Pete Seeger" "Oh, when will we ever learn?"

Please forgive this little tirade.

I wouldn't challenge "Mr. Find It Guy", if I were you! I'm convinced he'll be more than up to that challenge!

As for the first "spam", that's probably on the first "Monty Python" website! [Wink].

Is the "countdown" now at 20 days?

So all you're saying, basically, is that you have a good excuse for not finding the first-ever porn site on the Net already?

Perhaps you might want to replace Manfred Mann with Patti Page.

Instead of "Doo Wah Diddy Diddy", you should try "How Much is That Doggie in the Window?". That might make those animals realize what a terrific friend they have and start co-operating.

Hang in there, smith!
