This will not affect anyone for a few days.

I have today ordered a virtual dedicated server, with full access to all admin functions, and we are in process of moving the entire site there.

It is marginally more costly than the old host, who was $18.95 a month. This is €220 a year. And we get fewer "facilities" but total scope to play. Fewer facilities includes NO administrator to ask for shit. We are freeeeeeeeeeee!

So, how will this affect you:

To start with, not at all. We are moving the site in test mode, leaving the old site up in parallel.

At a certain point we will ask all users with email addresses "@iomfats.org" to check both NEW and OLD servers for mail. We will tell you how to access the new server if it is relevant to you. On or just after 11 July the old email server will DIE and you will have no email access to it at all. Any mail stored there will be deleted. Gone for ever. Hence the warnings now.

When we have tested the site totally, we will do several things:
  1. turn OFF the email list, the messageboard, Haiku Alley submissions, and any other area of the site with dynamic data on the OLD server
  2. take a full backup of the old server and upload it to the new one
  3. tunr the dynamic portions of the new site ON
  4. aim the DNS at the new IP address
We then have a 48 hour period during which the world stops seeing the old site and starts seeing the new site.

At that point, as soon as Megaman is happy, I will perform a site update with new stories and poems and other stuff that has been frozen for a while.

He is doing an AMAZING job.

We are 99% sure that there will be no huge issues, but we may have some small arreas of pain to rectify because of the kluge fixes that Blue Domino made us accept since February

I will keep you posted as we make progress.

Good luck with the change over. I hope all goes well.

We expect it to be sooner. But that is the cut over "dead in the water" date

Slow, as you would expect. Megaman is building the software environment from scratch. This includes the firewall, the email server and the apache environment within which the site will run and much else besides.

Even a sponge can migrate.

There will be sudden progress once the foundations have been laid

Will the new site still be here? Or will I need to learn a new address for it too?

They are going to be online all through, unless we have a disaster.
