God grant me the serenity to accept
the people I cannot change.

The courage to change the one I can.

And the wisdom to know that one is me.

I work with a group of children at the public library 3 times a week. I read them stories and they tell me what about their lives. The book we read today I chose because I'd had a bad morning and wanted to smile. It's called 'I Love You This Much' where a little bunny stretches his arms out wide as he can to show his daddy how much he loves him. I asked each of the kids to tell me who they loved and who they'd stretch their arms out wide to. One little guy said "Nobody". I told him he could stretch them out for me. He did and I got the first smile he'd ever shown me. It takes so little to make someone happy....thoughtfulness,kindness.

Thoughtless words hurt.
Unkind words hurt.

{{hugs}} Andy, may I have a tree? I'd like a silver maple if you have one.

I've been sitting here for quite some time, staring at this blinking cursor, wondering how to reply to this without being totally lame (and thereby cheapen such wise and beautiful thoughts). God has finally granted me wisdom to know (and the serentity to accept) that I can't. So my only possible reply is, "Amen, and Amen!"

For some strange reason, having said that, I find myself reminded of those scientific studies which show that it takes much more physical effort to frown than to smile; so it should therefore follow (I should think) that it's easier to make somebody else smile than it is to make him frown. smith certainly proved that with his young friend at the library. That simple gesture on smith's part made that sad little boy smile; and it must have brightened smith's mood considerably, too.

This message board is called "A Place of Safety"; and all our good host asks of those of us who come here is that we "observe simple behaviors...friendship and love". Some of us have forgotten (or even simply chosen to ignore) those simple tenets (I admit to being guilty of that myself), and in so doing cause those who come here seeking a place of safety to be frightened away.

May we all gain that wisdom (and serenity) to know that a smile is easier than a frown, so that we all (all!) may feel welcome and safe here.

And Andy (Tree Elf that you are!), may I have a tree, too? And, as much as I too love silver maples, could you make mine a white birch? Thanks!

~Peace~ and {{{hugs}}}

It always feels nice when you've got a down little kid and you manage to make them smile. The power of giving is so much greater than the power of receiving, that goes for good and bad.

It's a nice philosophy you've got there smith, one I try to adhere to myself. People complain about the state of the world, they say how society should change, how we as humans should be doing more to protect the environment, but as nice it would be, we can never change the world by ourselves. Instead we should look inwards, to our own country, our own families, our ownselves and work on them first, then once we're perfect we can justly tell others what THEY need to do.

Instead of trying directly to judge and force others, we just need to set an example and do the best we ourselves can. Hopefully the ripples we create will be able to reach others and spread through out the world. Everything is interconnected and although it may only be one small good deed you do one day that will have a positive effect that will last much, much longer.

While we're asking for trees, I think I've gotta request a gum tree- I miss home.....

Look at this tree. I cannot make it blossom when it suits me nor make it bear fruit before its time [...] No matter what you do, that seed will grow to be a peach tree. You may wish for an apple or an orange, but you will get a peach.

No fair, my family is crazy!! I wanna save the trees I dont want to save souls. There are other people who specialize in that. I guess If I cant save the world alone I would like everyone during the course to today. To go outside and find the tree that they like and give it a nice big hug. We will all work to save my friends.
Peace and one Gum Tree for Shem.
~Andy

PS If your lucky maybe a whole tree garden of Gum trees will appear like *does the little thing his home ec teacher does that is just so silly* magic!

smith, my friend, you have the soul of a poet and the wisdom of men ten times your age. I am so glad that you shared that with us. It really lifted me a bit right when i was feeling blue. Well, bluer than normal, heheh. We should collaborate on a story or something some time. I get the feeling it would be momentus. Maybe just a minor epic poem.

Keep up the toughest, most rewarding job there is, smith. Keep being the one who is brave enough to reach out and bring others into the light.
