Jack Rowan has published 4 stories on Nifty:

Story of Tim

Story of Tol

smith and Sam

Island Summer

I think all 4 are well worth reading for several reasons. They are all interesting and well written. I find it very impressive that one writer can sucessfully tackle such a broad range of subject matter. He is definitely not an "SM writer".

Story of Tol builds on the material in Story of Tim. I found it even more emotionally demanding than Story of Tim.

I think that taking the two together gives a clearer picture of how he is using SM as a literary vehicle to deal with issues of power and trust in relationships. In both stories he is writing about healing. I think that his efforts at this are very effective.

Got to me in a very personal way. For anyone with unrequited love it has emotional hand grenades in it.

Was the hardest story to read I have ever read. There are stories depicting much worse scenes, but Tol was gut wrenchingly difficult.

I read it because I trust Jack. It is too strong for me, yet it came to a satisfactory conclusion. But by no means a read for anyome who has been abused unless they are well healed from the experience.

Now here I found myself "at sea". I could be Kip, lovelorn Kip, Kip who finds love. But I was unable to free myself from watching him with an odd kind of horror as the tale progressed.

And yet the story is gentle and not one of horror at all.

Perhaps Kip was too close to who I might have been.

In reply to ien: you can find it in Nifty, Gay - Beginnings.

As my other stories have been mentioned:

The Story of Tol: I really would not advise this story for anyone who is disquieted by SM. It's very much for those who are prepared to take a very tough journey through the territory. It discusses abuse very directly, what it's like to be an abuser, and it's about repentance, payment, sacrifice and redemption. Its morality is in many ways very traditional, but the context is extreme and challenging. It is not a fun story and much of it was agony to write. Please, this is a very serious warning: if you have doubts, do not read it. Okay, I read the posts about 'Paint Drying' notices, but since it has been mentioned here (soemthing I would not myself have chosen to do) I can either warn, or not warn. It's my clear duty to warn.

'smith and Sam': genuinely a short story Smile There's no SM here, but a lot of sadness. No teenage characters.

'Island Summer': another long story, no SM. The two main characters are 18 and 23 years old. It's a love story and a kind of coming-out story, but more it's about growing up and leaving childhood behind.
I read the story of Tol and I enjoyed it a lot, (more)  [message #383 is a reply to message #380] Sat, 12 January 2002 19:14 Go to previous message
