Why? Well it has to be as near perfect as we can make it.

What? The replacement software to run the messageboard.

Now, don't expect this to be soon, because an awful lot has to go right behind the scenes. But we do have a board under internal alpha test at present. I don't expect this to be site ready before September. Before we go live we'll ask people to try to break it. Beta test! And we will DELETE ALL POSTS form the test board before we go live anyway.

We should be able to preserve 95% of the look and about 85% of the feel of the current board while losing its less desirable characteristics. The main one we expect to lose is for a page 2 thread to get stuck on page 2.

Other issues are probably internal issues. The current board has about 160MB of files behind it, which makes for poor website management.

Now, to those of you who are experts: I hate to break this to you, but so is Megaman. He may be better than you or not yet as good, but he sure knows what he's doing. So please don't come up with ideas like "use THIS software because it's wonderful". If it were wonderful he'd be using it!

If you have thoughts on truly desirable functionality, THOSE we'd be interested in hearing.

Things we will not do are to implement a chat (not desired by our host), and implement file upload (not desired by me).

We MAY implement a facility by the moderator to close a thread as a way of showing that things have "gone too far" in a subtle(!) manner with or without deleting posts. And some ideas you have may not be implmentable. NOTE that we never get rid of "double posts" because that is a cahce issue, not a software issue.

We've been totally aware of the limitations of "Anyboard" since we chose it as the best of the available bunch last time round before MySQL was available. Our objective is not to use the "latest and greatest" board, but instead to use software which preserves all the things we're familiar with, removes deficiencies, and is "site efficient", plus being really easy to use.

Not chat but like more like e-mail to/from members only, integrated into the message board? Nice for those who don't want to give out their e-mail address, or possibly have none, and faster/easier than using real e-mail. There are of course pros/cons to encouraging "behind the scenes" communication.
