Well it is either "Full Summer" or "Summer is approaching" depending in where you are in the world.

I am considering very seriously a story competition. The rules are not yet set, but advance warning always comes to the board first and other places second

I am thinking that the story must be about a theme
  • A summer vacation
  • Vacation romance
  • May be a person met on vacation or who was known already
No other theme rules are needed.

So, if I do this, do we have any takers?

Does this include stories already begun with the same general theme?

I had given no thought to whether the stories were "work in progress" or even finished already. I think the fair answer is "All stories with that general theme"

I am getting to grips with the rainsg scheme. I don't think we want winners and losers. What I think we want is opinions.

So we are going to design a ratings ballot to rate each submitted story according to the type of tale the reader thinks it is. Like "Sexy, erotic, romantic, sweet" etc.

We will have to do some head scratching about how to present the rating scheme and the results.

Winners and losers do not encourage submissions. One winner equals "all the rest lose", and that also leads to attempts to rig the ballot. I am into encouraging writers, not into encouraging winners and losers.

Beware of what you ask for....

Not all opinions are good.... And there are some here too thin skinned to take negitave feedback....

And some people are extreemily blunt....

Seems like we are looking at a shelf with several cans.... One is full of worms.... Shall we open it?

Then by default, they are not true opinions.

They would be your opinions by proxy....

No, they woudl not be my opinions by proxy at all. They woudl be the accurate opinions within a set of adjectives that we will select with care, of those who choose to vote.

My opinion will be in there along with those of the two other visitors to this website. It is simply that we will avoid adjectives like "crap, awful, rubbish, execrable, poor" We will, instead use adjectives to classify them into groupings. And peolpe will be able to apply multiple adjectives to a story.

People will be able to make of the ratings what they choose. The "score" is not "mine is better than yours" Instead it is "23 people found my story romantic, 30 erotic, 24 sweet. Now that interests me, because I thought I just wrote a fuck fest!"

This is not the only competition we will be having. If this is a success I anticipate a quarterly event, though 6 monthly may be more realistic.

By broadening the topic base, all I do is create a swamp of entries. By keeping it narrow each time then we encourage pretty much any story at all within a fairly loose set of parameters.

This is an example. It is a dummy. You cannot vote, and there is no point in voting. But it is for you to look at.

It isn't complete, and the adjectives may need changing. But note that it is all positive, and that it is not a "proxy" of my own opinion

I'm happy to take suggestions for addition adjectives or classifications.

What I expect to do is to embed the poll for the story in each story, and to present the results en masse

I certainly hope that any entry to this so called contest is not treated with the same brush as you treated that author that I suggested...further,I suggest broadening the range of topics so that this does not become a one horse show and a ego trip, but all-inclusive of the good talent thats out there..rob

Since there will NOT be any clear-cut winner in this contest but merely a rating as to venue content, why not have as many topics as possible,as this would open things up for more authors and not be so limited...If this forum is truely a democratic family, why not let the members decide as to topic?....rob

It is a website, and as such it gets the things I put there to attract and keep visitors.

I ask for opinions. I do not always take them. Such is the nature of opinions.

Why, instead of arguing, do you not simply accept that something might actually be worthwhile? Not everything has to be changed, you know.

Your suggestion is duly noted.

I have no idea why you must always pick holes in everything, but it seems that you must.

I do this for pleasure. It is a (normally) pleasant hobby of mine. A large number of people seem to like what I do. The email list contains just under 1,000 subscribers who come back for more. It seems likely that I am doing somethying right, especially since the site gets over 700 front door visits a day, and over 1,600 visits a day in total.

I do not propose to discuss the verdict I gave you on the stories you sent to me in public forum.

I have no idea what you are suggesting about a one horse show and ego trip. Since the floor will be open to all, if you feel you have something to contribute, the contribute it. If it's readable and meets the rules, then it makes the cut.

And please stop digging and poking at me in this forum. Or, come to that, anywhere at all. I am more brassed off with snide remarks than I can possibly tell you.

I made a strong promise to myself that I would NEVER argue with anyone on this forum again and I have kept my word.I do think you are being too critical of any comment I make however well intentioned they might be.I was simply suggesting expansion of the topic base to make the forum more inclusive to others and in no way was being critical of anyone...rob

It is a simple thing. I am creating a place where people can submit stories with a theme. The stories will be required to be submitted between certain dates and on a certain theme. The audience will be encouraged to attribute adjectives to them, but not to appoint winners and losers.

Later, there will be other themes. This theme is set.

This has nothing whatsoever to do with a forum. It is a place where an author may submit a story.

But I am now at the point of wondering if it's all worth the bother.

It makes total sense.

It avoids "fan club vote stuffing" and all the other ills one gets with anything that involves ratings.

I am still trying to decide whether to submit the ones I have written over the years (the anonymous idea is a huge help here), or to withold and simply watch. I think it will depend on the volume of entries. Oddly I am not sure which way round that volume should be.

http://iomfats.org/storyshelf/hosted/contestentries/summer2003/ comntains the draft of the submissions page.

Please note that no dates and deadlines have been set yet, and that the rating system is developing.

We expect that people will rate reasonably competently, but should also recognise that the world is full of assholes too.

each author will have to be honor bound not to "spill the beans" so to speak, but I don't really think that will be a problem.... Every one here has integrity enough to keep it to themselves....

As for your own work.... Why not? If everything is held annonomous then it is an open field...

What about multiple submissions???

What if there is not enough time to completly finish the work to the authors complete satisfaction???

Over all I think the system, requirements, limitations, and process are alltogether fair....
