I first discovered about him at university, form a friend in the road construction business. He was building a bypass arounbd Warwick, and he found Piers Gaveston's Cross which marks the alleged spot where he was murdered. http://www.video-images.freeserve.co.uk/gaveston_monum.htm though I do not recall it as in woods near a car park

Then I learnt why. And learnt how his lover, the King was murdered.

Schools pretty much ignore the method of Edward's death. He was "done to death by the nobles" is how it is put. Being homosexual was not tolerated then, either

Nah, we didn't either...You never learn the good stuff until University, for some reason.

Good book about these two guys (for anybody who likes historical romance novels), by the way: "Gaveston" by Chris Hunt. 1998, Gay Men's Press ISBN 0-85449-262-5. I think Amazon has it.

One of the kings of Thailand in the early part of the 20th century was also most likely gay. But not only is there nothing taught about it in history classes here, it's actually illegal to discuss the Royal Family negatively.
