Hi guys! Smile
Just wanted to know whether any of you guys know what "shounen ai" is. Some people like 'em, some people loathe 'em. I'm writing an essay about it and I kind of wanted to know what you guys think about it.:-/

Any type of reaction'll do.
Personally for me, I kind of find it cute.
The basic info goes like this:
"shounen ai" is a genre of japanese animation which focuses entirely on relationships between two boys. You can see some pictures of shounen ai anime's "Silver Chaos" and "Private School" below.

Please don't flame me for this one.
I've heard some people totally loathe shounen ai (actually, anime altogether) to the core. Smile

I have seen this type of cartoon/anime drawing from time to time....

For the most part alot of them seem far to intergenerational for my tastes....

There are those that get off on that sort of thing, I personally find it repulsive.

but many are done in good taste as well... One just has to cull the bad from the good....

Life is great for me... Most of the time... But then I meet people online... Very few are real friends... Many say they are but know nothing of what it means... Some say they are, but are so shallow...

Why would anyvbody flame you for liking art like this, I wonder? I haven't ever seen much of it, but it looks interesting, and it does seem like art to me, and not lewd or crude or rude. (THat's what a friend of mine calls the "3 Udes")

And, sort of what Marc is saying, I guess (altho we each may have different tastes in art) good art is only different from bad art in the eye of the beholder.

They even have gay computer dating games where you try to woo awesomely hot guys so you can get them in bed with you (complete with animated action and stuff). Not sure that's my cup of tea really, but still, it's cool they got it. Smile We're so damn morally uptight over here... Not saying they haven't got their hang-ups over there too (because god knows that is true!), but in some ways they're a lot more open.

I tend to prefer sites like http://bastardgenres.com/mdy/yanimeframe.htm. shounen to me implies the juvenile body form, which is not what I am into

hmmm...

i find the bottom two very, very gorgeous. in fact they remind me HEAVILY of the characters i submitted a story here for...

particularly the very bottom, as they are in an alley but 'dressed for school,' as said mystery characters of mine and someone's just began school. or well, going BACK. but!

i'm really not into it enough to know specifics. to me, they look teenaged, at least the pictures you showed. so!

I don't know much about that particular group, the guy on guy thing, but my walls are covered with Japanese manga that I draw. I really love the different ways to express emotion, especially the eye art.

I gotta say that the dark haired guy in the second picture is like totally wicked awesome Razz

Being the resident Japanese correspondant. "Shonen-ai" literally means 'youth love' and refers to a style of anime which usually involves just that. It was started, I believe, by females artists in response to all the anime scenes in which involved females, either together, or portrayed in sexy ways. Despite seeming gay in nature, it has a definate target audience of females and usually portrays young boys finding their way, or young boys having older characters 'show them the way'. Another term for shonen-ai is 'yaoi' which is an abbreviation for 'yama-nashi ochi-nashi imi-nashi' which means roughly, "no climax, no resolution, no meaning".

Another term used by westerners to desribe fan-based yaoi is 'slash', where particular characters from a game or anime are paired, or slashed together. For example Sephiroth/ Cloud (from the game, Final Fantasy 7). When slashing characters it is important to note the order of names, in most cases the character before the slash is the 'seme' or dominant, and the character after the slash is the 'uke' or submissive. Although the relationships are seldom actual BDSM, there is a certain level of 'inequality' (although I use that word losely) in the relationships.

Lenny mentioned Japanese culture is, saying western culture was more morally uptight. However, Japanese culture is actually less accepting of true homosexuality. People here are so homogenous that for someone to be gay disturbs the natural order of things. Hence while people here may be gay, they are more likely to remain closeted and more likely to get married to a woman, too. I've been living in Japan 5 months, now, yet I still don't totally understand the Japanese attitude towards such things. I believe they consider it perfectly acceptable in other people and in fictional characters, because, after all being gay is a foreign problem, not a Japanese one, so they can afford to accept it on a distanced level.

Sorry Lenny- but I kind of forgot! ;-D
I just happened to be searching for shounen ai pics in yahoo and their names just sorta popped up.

I'll try to do another search and maybe I can give you the address. ^_^
You've seen Neon Genesis Evangelion too!
I also did- although there really isn't anything about Shinji AND Kaworu there. (Though I hoped there was). They just happened to be paired by shounen & yaoi fans a lot.

I also got another pic here.
:-[ I'm so... jealous of these two in the picture.
Come hell or high water- I'm DEFINITELY going to ask Stephen even JUST ONE HUG! JUST ONE, one of these days! ::-) I don't know if he'll like or will be comfortable with that idea though. Confused??

...Then I can find it myself without too much difficulty I guess.

I haven't watched NGE, I buy the manga books as they're released - much too slowly in my opinion, heh heh! There's no Kaworu character in the manga version (they're not exactly the same), maybe he's introduced late in the animé? (I will get it on DVD after I have all the manga volumes. I don't want to spoil myself to what happens later on. Don't think there's much left, they've waxed most of the angels by now.)

That 2nd pic was sweet too by the way, thank you! Smile

Also... If you ask nicely without being too weird and freaky about it, I'm sure Steve'll give you a hug, or let you get one yourself even. Smile He seems like a great friend, and if you explain it carefully enough I'm sure he'd understand...

Take care okies?

Where did ya learn that? Or did you just get the song for your signature off the internet? Just curious, since usually only Finnish people speak Finnish...

I know a little bit of Finnish.
I'm a huge Nylon Beat Fan, so I picked it up from them.

I'm still curious as to where you learned Finnish, but if I'm being too... something, tell me to mind my own business. I'm not gonna mind Smile But still, I think it's really cool that someone who doesn't live in Finland (and hasn't lived in Finland?) knows Finnish and Finnish bands is cool Smile and if ya don't mind me asking, where did ya hear Nylon Beat the first time?

1999, I was browsing the 'net, and saw the MP3 for: "Syytön" on a site with a bunch of songs from throughout Europe. I fell in love with it the first time,
and have been a Nylon Beat fan for 4 years now. Longer than any other band.
And no, I've never lived in Finland...
But, I wanted to know what they were saying, so I researched it.
I know around 50 words of Finnish from studying it.

Ok, the "direct" translation would be something like "Löydän silti tieni" but that would be... you could say that, but it sounds a little weird. But I'm guessing you mean something along the lines "I'm gonna be ok, despite [whatever]"? That would be "Tulen kyllä toimeen" or "Pärjään kyllä" or "Pärjään kaikesta huolimatta" or "Tulen toimeen kaikesta huolimatta", in "written Finnish" anyway. The way some would actually say it on the street is "Kyllä mä pärjään", which translates to more or less "I'm gonna be fine/cool".

Hmm... a lot of babble over one sentence... but I hope it helps Smile
