I am going to leave the supposed message above here as an example of the type of message I wil not tolerate on this board at all.

In future I will have no hesitation in both deleting such a post and in banning the poster whoever it turns out to be.

If you have an opinion which you believe to be valid, then I am content to see a well argued and polite post. If all you have is a shout, please simply go away. I don't want you here if you cannot discuss properly, I don;t want posts like that here, and I will not tolerate them.

I know that you are the same anonymous perosn who has shouted before, and been admonished before. One chance on this board. The chance that you just had. Any further yells or slogans, then you go. Period. Behave, then you can stay. Part of the behaviour means no stupid names. Stick to one name that identifies you, a pseudonym. In all cases I will not tolerate an offensive one.

Well said, Tim!

But seriously, what is the problem that some people seem to have about taking an anonymous poll, anyhow? I don't get it at all, and I'd like to understand it better.

I think the problem is that some people have an axe to grind, but are unable to say clearly and in an erudite manner what it is.

This person has objected to polls before. Regrettably, instead of either igniring them, or behaving in a civilised manner and making an infomred post, he or she yells and stamps their foot and acts in a juvenile manner.

All messagebaords have "spoilers" and other weird characters. This one will be welcome if well behaved, and barred if not.

It is no big deal to turn the security switches on here. No genuine poster will object. I am simply concerned not to do it in case someone in need is put off because of it. If I have to, then it is this random yelling fool that will have caused it.

It's odd. The only rule I insist on is politeness. This person manages to break that every single time, and with glee.

I confess that I can't see what all the fuss is about. OK, I agree that anonymous posting is irritating, and on the whole unnecessary - though I do see possible problems with a 'family' computer. But, frankly, I don't think the postings in question are particularly offensive - if I wanted to be offensive I'd leave no-one in doubt as to my intention! I even suspect that some of the comments may be made with tongue in cheek.

Hey, we see ourselves as a persecuted minority. Well, let's face it, we ARE a persecuted minority! Why not turn the other cheek? You can choose which cheek (or pair of cheeks) to turn!

Not untrue, but I personally think it is just plain annyoing. I mena, i guess we are all on this board to enjoy ourselves and it personally annoys when somebody decides to put anonymous negative postings just as he likes. That is just my opinion.

It is simply impolite. Not fun. It is a snipinig act, and I feel it detracts from what I wish this place to be.

I want us to be a place were we can

  • have fun
  • debate deep topics
  • help those who ask
  • much more

I do not want this to be a place where people

  • worry about being sniped at
  • feel unable to post for fear of ridicule
  • feel in any way "unsafe" or "unsure"

That doesn't mean that funny topics are not allowed, but there is a place for them. An irregualr poster may be upset right now because I erased some odd and humerous posts. But they were in the middle of a serous thread, and that was the only reason they were not appropriate. They detracted totally from the topic in hand.

Is the answer to make giving an email address compulsory? I can see why on occasion it should not be on public display - an appeal for help or advice, for example. But could there be a button called 'suppress email address' which left the address visible only to Tim? Who could then use it, at his discretion, to reprimand an irresponsible poster.

Merely a thought from a non-technical mind.

If I make the email compulsory all that it will check is that data is in the field. There is much available to me in any case to identify a poster in all but name that enables me to make a rifle targetted ban. I wil only use this of forced to. if I do I will make public as much of the information relating to the banned perosn as I choose togetehr with a statement that tehy are responsible.

Really this is a mountain when it should be a molehill. If people exhibited good behaviour it would be unnecessary

I think that some of this is just our curiosity about how Message Boards actually work...at least it is to me, who knows nothing about it!

I innocently asked the same elsewhere. To summarize, the two most valid (to me) non-axe-grinding answers were (1) gay-bashers can view the results and use them for their "cause" against us and (2) the polls may not be "statistically valid."

But #1 is one of those "lies, damn lies, and then there's statistics" deals where anyone can take any stats out of context and twist them. #2 doesn't seem too relevent considering it's "just for fun."

I've also heard the privacy issue - "that's personal" - but it IS anonymous and I can't exactly see Tim capturing our IP addresses and siccing the porno police on us!
