This chapter is maybe the most heart wrenching tale I have ever read. I have watched its creation and gestation, and I admire smith for his writing more that I can possibly say for this story.
He's worried that it may be a chapter that somehow puts you off. Well, if it does then it does. But let him know either way. Today, please.

smith is so talented. To invoke emotion is a mark of a good writer. If that is even partially true, then smith is more than a success.
Way to go!
And thank you for sharing your story with all of us. I am looking forward to the next installment.
Much love and happiness to you,
Kevin

Read and thought it was great, as always. I in particular like how I've seen smith's writing mature and grow. It was great from the start, sure, but I think I've seen it develop significantly so far and hope to see it grow even more.
As for the story, without giving anything away I thought it was a perfectly reasonable addition, not off-putting at all. It is a story about pain and trying to overcome that pain, showing how hard it can be.
Look at this tree. I cannot make it blossom when it suits me nor make it bear fruit before its time [...] No matter what you do, that seed will grow to be a peach tree. You may wish for an apple or an orange, but you will get a peach.

I won't spoil this chapter for those that haven't read it yet, but I will say that what you've done to both of your characters made me very ticked off when I read it. Ticked off because they aren't just words on a screen any more, like how Chris and Nigel aren't just words on a screen to me. They are people that I have come to love as friends. And to see my friends put into such anguish not only angered me, but brought tears to my eyes. So I'm kinda upset that this happened to people I know, especially after all the turmoil they've been through.
But I'm also happy that they not only kept faith with each other, but that they held on to what they believe in. And that is an encouraging thought.
Again, I don't want to spoil it for the others, so I wont say anymore. I will say this though: you've got a rare and beautiful talent. One that has not only the wit and power of language to convey your story visually and with deep emotion, but to see into the heart of what makes us all tick. To drag from our own hearts, minds & souls that which is not only real, but that which haunts our steps in our own darkened places. In short, you've got the whole of the human experience at your command, and you command it well to the written form.
It takes some authors a lifetime to achieve what you do with a simple and direct passion and integrity. You've found your voice, and so far you've sung out beautifully. So in case no one has said it before (which I highly doubt), thank you for sharing your wit, wisdom, charm, joy, pain, hopes, fears and voice with all of us. Your stories touch us all and we do appreciate them and your effort in producing them. May we all have the courage to do the same, one day.
In closing, something simple and classical at the same time. I believe it is the motto of your protagonists, and one which we all cling to in one way or another. Dum spiro, spero. Rough translation, from the Latin: While I breah, I hope.
Keep the hope alive, smith. And again, I humbly thank you.

for reading my story and for helping me through the tough parts. Like Jordan told Danny: "It gets easier every time you tell it."
While we breathe, we hope ... good lines, D.
