I have a question, Steve. If there is such open hatred, how do these kids just walk in there? I think it's great they have a place to go where they won't feel different and alone. I hope it continues to be a success Smile

smith (and everybody),

Life here is not as you see it almost daily on your TV news. Israel is a free democracy and anyone can go anywhere they choose. The Jerusalem Open House is situated on one of Jerusalem's main streets: it is on the third floor, and hanging from there for all to see proudly hangs the rainbow flag.

As elsewhere in the world, in Israel there are homophobes, especially in the ultra-religious population, but they are fast becoming an outdated minority. There are institutions such as the Jerusalem Open House in many of Israel's cities, but the Jerusalem one is very important because it gives Palestinian gays the opportunity to escape for a while from their own culture which is literally violently homophobic.

How do they go in without being scared of being seen by a friend, and exposed as gay?

Easy! The Open House is situated in a block of offices, on the third floor. When you go into the main entrance from the street you could be going into any office in the building. (It's a very old, rambling building; I think it dates from the Turkish period!)

In any case - it works! Timmy: if it works, don't mend it.
