Tonight I finished my Black forest Cake and only have to put the finishing touches on my Sacher cake. I baked Black Forest cakes before, but never had one that tasted or looked as good as this one. ;-D

They gave us the history of the Sacher cake. Apparently it has become the National Ckae of Vienna, though it seems strange that a city would have a National Cake. Anyhow, for all you young'uns out there and all you old fogies who think kids can't make a valid contribution to society. the cake was invented by a 16 year old apprentice working for the Royal family in Vienna. As the story goes, the Prince was entertaining and asked that a special dessert be prepared for the banquet. The chef had become ill, so the responsibility fell to his apprentice. The young man produced a almond-chocolate cake filled with apricot jam and covered with chocolate. The lad was so bold that he signed every piece in chocolate and to this day a true Sacher cake is inscribed with his last name ("Sacher") on every piece. Apparently, there is a Sacher Hotel in Vienna that owns the rights to the name. They supposedly have a website where you can order a Sacher cake online. I think I'll look for it after I finish this post.

Unfortunately, I had a little mishap tonight as well. The kitchen is full of non-slip mats on the floor and at the end of class these mats are dragged into a corner and stacked up out of the way so the floor can be swept and mopped. In our other classes, the stack of mats was in an area where they could be seen. Tonight, I rounded a corner and stepped between two work tables while carrying a stack of metal bowls. I couldn't see the floor directly in front of me and while I was expecting a mat to be on the floor, I wasn't expecting a stack of them. I tripped and metal bowls went flying everywhere. The mats made for a nice soft landing, but I ended up with a cramp in my right calf and I think I tweaked my back a little. Nothing too serious, but I may be moving quite slowly tomorrow. :-/

Of course I'm also going to go get a piece of that Black Forest cake. It is guaranteed to make me feel better.

{{HUGS to all}}

Think good thoughts,
e
