Over the last week and a half, I have been suffering from a most horrible cold. I can't remember ever having one that was this bad for this long. It started last Tuesday evening when I began to get a sore throat. I became quite congested in the sinuses and started taking sinus meds on Wednesday. Friday we had a day off from school which I was quite thankful for since I was barely functional. But instead of getting to spend the day resting in bed, I spent it at the tax lady's office. I have spent everyday since then in bed. I can barely keep my eyes open and looking at a computer screen simply hurts. The doctor gave me some antibiotics and some vicodin for the pain (my sinuses are making me feel like my face has been punched in). But the medications are having little effect. I will try and get another appointment for tomorrow or later today. I got a call from the school yesterday. I've now missed too much class (3 days) to be able to make up the work before the end of the term (next week). I'm not sure I would be able to do it anyways since I'm still not capable of going to class. They are putting me on a leave of absence. I'll miss the remainder of this term, then pick up where I left off next term. That means I'm falling one term behind. I won't be seeing my classmates anymore. :'-( On the bright side, I get to meet new classmates. It won't effect my grades and I get a bit of time off. Just thought I'd let you guys know.

Hang in there...sounds like it might actually be sinusitis, which can be worse than the flu for sure...
Misery loves company, they say...I have been enduring sciatica (pinched nerve in lower back causing leg pain when walking) for about a month now, and taking arthritis anti-inflamatories which hopefully will work...and acupuncture is the next thing to try...
And now I'm having tonsillitis, which requires expensive antibiotics this week. Sigh...it's hell being middle aged! Avoid it if you can, everybody!

That sucks to hear you're in such poor shape, and that you'll miss school too! That's a total bummer. What will you do for the rest of the term then?
*cuddly hug + hands over cup of chicken broth which if you are sick and tired of I will eat myself :)*
On a side-note, one should never eat antibiotics against viral infections such as colds, as it has no effect on them and will only serve to strengthen various odd germs you may carry (and those that live in our sewers too as traces of medicine will pass through your system), and that will leave us all more vulnerable when bacteria do strike.
This is very very important. The US is a huge consumer of superflously prescribed penicillin and antibiotics, this is a real threat to the stability of our society. Once the large, dangerous diseases we conquered last century acquire immunity, they are free to make a large-scale comeback and wrek havoc in the general population again.
So, please do not eat those pills unless you actually NEED them.

Thanks Lenny and David. David, that pinched nerve is a horrible thing. I've had those before and it is definitely no fun. Get Man to massage it gently every night. Get him to use Kwan Loong(sp?) oil. It's a sort of eucalyptus oil that provides a gentle heat and works well. I get my wife to massage it into me for various muscle and joint aches and pains.
I actually felt a wee bit better today, though I'm still ill. I'm fixing a sort of chicken soup/stew for dinner hoping to rely on the healing properties of chicken soup.
As for the antibiotics, I hate to take them, but I am anyways. It's difficult to say whether this is viral or bacterial in nature, but they do seem to be helping slightly. I'm going back to the doctor tomorrow to see if they really are working or if I need to try something else. I'm not getting over this fast enough for my tastes.

Chicken stew sounds awesome. My adoptive parents have a really yummy recipie for that. I've never dared to try and make it myself, but I've had it many times when I was a kid and such of course...
Take care of yourself, granddaddy e. :-*

The pain in my sinuses is considerably less today. I didn't need to take the vicodin, just tylenol to deal with it. My head is still very congested though and I'm coughing a whole lot. I went to the doctor who was very concerned about the coughing and my breathing. She had me take this breathing test and I couldn't do it without coughing. She gave me a breathing treatment that seemed to help and I could then do the test. She's concerned about possibly developing pnuemonia, but says if I do what she says, that shouldn't happen. I got a whole bunch of new meds. Nasal spray, inhaler, a refill on the vicodin (even though I might not need it), some stuff for my eyes too, but no more antibiotics. She said the one they gave me should suffice and said definitely that it is necessary. It lasts well beyond the pills. At least I'm starting to feel a bit better. I'm giving credit to Lenny's chicken soup.
