My friend and I were just wandering san francisco yesterday, looking for a good movie at a good time, the two major theaters had nothing around the time we wanted to watch something so we decided to try out the local independent movie theater to see what they had, lo behold they had a gay themed movie. We watched it and we were really shocked to see that it was a really good movie. we both really liked it. It was called "Latter Days" The movie talked about the mormon church, a boy's struggle with himself and religion, and a pretty boy who tries his best to counter the stereotypes associated with his type of person. The movie was both sad, serious, and funny at various parts, but it was a really strong, well made film. I myself believe that it is one of the best independent movies i've seen, especially gay themed, mainly because the movie not only attempts to tackle the hardships of gay guys and their struggles with religion, but also trying to break down the stereotypes we associate with people. I really do think people should watch it. It's a very powerful movie, and I'm very glad to watch it. Unfortunately I can't say where the movie is playing, since it is an independent movie. High chances that the movie is only running in small independent movie theaters, and not at all. Anyways the movie has a website : http://www.latterdaysmovie.com/ and i guess they do have a listing as to where the movie is playing, so hopefully it's playing close to you. I've read some reviews and even sussed out the message board at a stage. Being both gay and a former Mormon it kind of held some relevance to me. Living in Japan obviously makes it difficult for me to view the film. From what I understand, the movie portrays a gay guys that goes through the most extreme measures the Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints ever used. I just mention this because although I don't support the religion entirely, I think a lot of people who watch the film may get the wrong idea about the faith as in the movie the Church (from what I understand) is kind of like the 'enemy'. Still, I think it'd be a very interesting movie to see for anyone, whether gay, Mormon, both or neither; it's just a pity it IS independent.
