I find they blackmail us intopassing them on and on and on.
So I am going to do something with this one, Nigel
I am going to wish you the luck you need, and I am then going to delete the chain letter. Those who want it have seen it.
Why not tell us what's going wrong, and why not repost the poem, if you like, without the "bad luck " parts?

Any chain letter that makes threats is really quite awful.
I daresay I came across a nice one back in grade 7 that was merely an attempt to have post cards sent to one another all over the world. It caused no harm, no expense (other than the $1 postcard and small international postage fee), it was intended to create a ripple effect, with each person passing it on to 6 more, however unfortunately I failed myself to receive any postcards which was kind of sad.
I know people have a cynical attitude towards 'Pay it Forward' start slow then grow kind of movements and some people have a negative attitude towards chain letters (which I can see is founded based on the vast number that threaten a plague upon the people that fail to continue them). Overall I think they can be a positive thing, just so long as all that is required is a little time or small amount of invested money (not the direct investment of money, but rather a small purchase such as the postcard).
Look at this tree. I cannot make it blossom when it suits me nor make it bear fruit before its time [...] No matter what you do, that seed will grow to be a peach tree. You may wish for an apple or an orange, but you will get a peach.

Ah, "Pay it Forward". Now how do I know that you've seen that movie???
I like that one myself, and the idea behind it.
I guess I'm to blame for some of those chain letters too. I mainly just send them forward because of the story or the wish in them. Guess I should learn to delete the part about bad luck and other stuff in the ones I recieve.

P.S. I'd like to hear the poem you recieved Nigel.

... to the same conclusion.
I hate chain-letters, especially those espousing theological points of view; and like you I have often felt, strictly because of the subject matter, beholden to have to reply.
To this end, recently when upon receipt of another of these missives, I pointedly contacted the most recent recipient, and attendant sender, asking that I not be considered in similar ventures in the future, expressing to them, exactly as you have, that I feel I'm being blackmailed in to having to continue the chain because to not do so would be reflective in one manner or another that I'm against whatever worthy sentiments they may in fact express. This is balderdask of course, but it's the perception ... I feel icky, or somehow inadequate if I don't, and I don't like feeling that way.
So to people out there, if you receive a chain-letter, and feel it might be something I should be made away of, then by all means "copy the contents" and send it individually to me, but don't ask me to send it to others, becuaw others have asked that of you.

Please simply send it to me marked clearly "Chain Letter" in the subject line. I will take the "risk" of deleting it for you. I have no problem with doing this and in wishing you all the luck, fortune, good wishes you deserve.
I don't mind what it threatens. Just send it to me if you are worried about it
