I got caught by 3 trains tonight, actually 2, but the one was making a left hand turn in town, so I got caught twice by it.

I live in a town that is listed as one of the top 10 towns for train traffic in the USA. We're like the top 5 for the best place to watch trains in the country. A train heading any direction N,S,E,W can change directions in our town.

I was sitting there, watching it go by, looking at all the graffiti, and got thinking that "Hey, these train cars see more of the country than I do" I kinda imagined "fantasised" about being one of those cars, seeing the country side, the big cities, the faces watching me go by, etc...

I'd be one of the old ones, battered, torn, yet still hauling my load, painted with the awesome graffiti, getting my marks for where I've been, even snickering at the comments from the waiting people at the crossings.

You'd always be at risk of derailing, putting an end to your adventure, or rusting in places that can't be fixed, end up like the old cabose that is rarely seen. But what a life. Do your little job, and enjoy the sites.

It always amazes me what I think about when stopped by a train, that little time when you have nothing to do but sit and wait....

wouldn't it be nice if you could fold up the time you spend doing stupid things like waiting in line at the supermarket, or waiting for bridges to lower, or waiting for trains to go by, and put it in little boxes and then take it out and use it for important things, like spending time with your lover or buying ice cream for your favorite nephew?

I do all the time. I travel a long time to get to school. During vacation there is no transportation provided so i use public transportation as a method to get to school. My travel time is 2 hours, i take 2 buses and the underground train here in Los Angeles, California. Sometimes i just sit there and i see all sorts of people get on and off the bus/train. I look at the world outside and i see many people , places, cars, the world in general just pass in front of my eyes while watching from that small window in the bus , sometimes sitting right next to me a total stranger. The things i get to see are unbelievable and sometimes i feel small because i think about my life and honestly is not so bad at all. There are many others out the with much worse problems with me. I observe things around me all the time, riding the bus/train in my city has made even more observant.

What a super thought! However, waiting for a train, a bridge, a ferry or anything else impeding one's progress can be a chance to make progress in a different direction: thinking through a relational problem -- "if this happens, then this can happen, or this..." etc. And the opportunities for face-to-face conversation while the car is involuntarily stopped -- priceless. Make sense? d
