They're sayin that the hurricane is less than 12 hours from hittin us here. I'm at Robby's house, so we're all sfe and well stocked. I just wanted to tell everyone that we're okay and we'll be riding it out. I'm scared shitless, cause like this storm has already killed a lot of ppl in Jamaica. I've never gone through storm like this. I just hope that anyone else out here is gettin ready.
I love u all, keep ur fingers crossed. they say like we could be 3 weeks without power if stuff gets nasty. smith, we should make patches or stickers or t-shirts ....."I survived the Tropical Wrath of God, Florida - Summer 2004" We'd make a fortune. I'm gonna try to help out here if i can after the storm is gone. Robby's sharpening stuff in case we need to cut thru trees and stuff. He says to tell everyone to take care of each other. And we'll be back when we can. He also said that he's got hardcopies of the stuff he's workin on, so if the computer gets killed, he wont lose all the new stories he's like half done writin, LOL
okay, i guess i gotta send out like emails and stuff to let ppl know i'll be okay. Thank u everyone who's been pullin for me. I hope we all come outta this okay

You're as tough as smith. You'll be fine. Even so wishing you good luck can't hurt

I actually have a t-shirt that says: "I Survived Hurricane Charley" so I guess you'll find one that has Ivan.
Be careful and stay safe....stay away from the windows and drink lots of Gatorade. I'm watching The Weather Channel right now and that's one big storm.
I'm 5 feet above sea level but I just learned that the French Quarter in New Orleans in 7 feet BELOW sea level. I hope the levees hold.
Sammy, let us know you're okay as soon as you can.

Hang on tight, Sammy, Robby, and families! Y'all take care, my fellow Gulf Coasters. I'll send good thoughts and prayers your way.
Plastic baggies and safe-box for those disks and printouts. They're just stuff, though. We like you better.
We'll be here when you get back.

I know their power is out but I'll fret till I hear from them. Chain saws and Gatorade and the lovely sound of a generator to round out the 'happiness' of a hurricane :-/
{{hugs}} to them and everyone who was touched by Ivan.

Although I think they're safe I know what you mean about fretting until you get first hand news. Last I heard from Tyger it was about 10-11 pm CT time the night of the storm and a tree had come down crushing a mailbox and their power was going in and out. I've been keeping a close watch on the reports since then, but I'm not going to feel totally at ease until I actually hear how Ivan affected them.
Look at this tree. I cannot make it blossom when it suits me nor make it bear fruit before its time [...] No matter what you do, that seed will grow to be a peach tree. You may wish for an apple or an orange, but you will get a peach.

Nice to see you're OK, smith. (That reminds me, I have to finish reading JHS.) My other Florida friends are OK too, thank God.
Here's hoping Sammy, Robby and family/-ies are fine. Best wishes for utilities, dry bed, safe roof, cool air (!), water and ice, food storage, ... all the necessities. (And may I say, from the last hurricane outage I went through, I hope I never see canned corned beef again?!)

That's excellent news. -- An early welcome to Sammy and Robby and family(-ies) for when they get power back.
It's typical after a hurricane to have very hot weather and very little breeze and almost cloudless skies, as if Mother Nature has raged all she can and now is just plain tired and trying to apologize. But in a few days, the weather will return to normal, and since it's now late September, that means gradually milder temps. on the Gulf Coast.
Hang in there, Sammy and everyone. I hope the damage and cleanup won't be too much. -- But the main thing is, you're safe.

To get an idea of the amount of destruction that Ivan caused go to this site to see some before and after pictures. We got about 10 inches of rain in Atlanta from this storm, but the damage was very minor in comparison.

Well, we survived it. Not really sure how we survived it, but we did. Ivan the Terrible has caused more than just a significant disruption in our lives here in Northwest Florida. All four of the hospitals in Pensacola, including the one where Sammy was getting treatments, were heavily damaged. Just judging by the pictures I've seen in the local newspapers and the damage around my neighborhood, the storm was more than just horrifically huge and powerful, it was nothing short of raw devistation given form and direction. We are all very thankful that it didn't kill more people than it did.
Sam and I came through the storm unharmed. Even managed to conscript our Tyger into helping with some of the tree removal duties around the neighborhood. My house was spared major damage. Mostly we lost the fences and my car took a nasty blow from a close encounter with a local pine tree. But these things can all be repaired and rebuilt. The loss of life was gratefully very low.
I do want to say a huge thank you to the hundreds of repair teams from across the USA and Canada that came in to help us after the storm. It took us a week to get power back in my house. Judging from the destruction that I saw at the local substation, I'd have given it more like a month to six weeks, but these guys handled it with skill, pride, teamwork, and determination. Gentlemen, my hat's off to ya!
Things are far from normal here these days, but getting closer to getting there than I'd have imagined, especially after visits from Charly and Frances in South Florida. One can only hope that the experience of our infrastructure repair teams in those two disasters has given our contruction, power, water and other utilities workers the experience they need to tackle similar disasters anywhere else with the same alacrity and accumen.
Now we just have to see where the day takes us.
Cya on the other side, my brothers.

Bonjour, M. D'Artagnon. -- Glad to hear of good progress there. So the Tyger was out sharpening his claws on all those pine trees? That's about what they're good for, alright. -- Will y'all have to commute to another hospital for treatment?
It seems Ivan wanted to tour (or tear into) the rest of the coast. Lots of rain this weekend, here, probably. -- At least maybe it'll give y'all a much-deserved break from further rain and such.
God bless you both.

He'll be sharpening his chess skills on med students unwary enough to realize he's a chess hustler. He only plays for money to get tonics and snacks from vending machines mind you, but he's wicked good.
I just got home from work after spending a few hours trading spaces on the ground and in the air. Sammy's in Baltimore now, getting the gene therapy part of the treatment. Most likely he'll be home in a few days until we can all figure out his treatment schedule more. He may be coming back here, provided the clinc he goes to here has an operational facility soon and we don't get tagged by another gentle reminder from mother nature that while we're the dominant species on the planet, we aren't the dominant force on this earth.
I'm gonna go get the first warm shower I've had since before the storm and sleep a little. And Sammy, if you're reading this, they've been warned about you, so no betting on internet chess either.
Cya on the other side,
D

My chess skills are wimpy from neglect. Have to fix that.
-- Sammy, maybe you should chess hustle for some books or CDs, or at least hospital scrubs, instead of those :censored: backless things. (Although it looks like they're lots better about real clothes these days.)
What about other large med. centers, such as Houston, if the local hosp. is still in "fixer-upper" mode?
-- I didn't know they had a gene therapy for that. (I'm not in the med. field.)
Yup, nothing beats hot water, A/C and heating, electricity, and phone service. -- And not having a pine tree or two make too close a visit.
