Okay.........who's seen 'Alexander the Great'? It's already been pronounced a flop and the critics are saying it's because of the >>gasp<< suggestive homosexual conduct; that his sexuality is not an important issue in his life.
Now, I know that Alexander had a boyhood friend named Hephaestion, who grew up to be his lover. Why is that not important to his life story? The Evangelicals are going crazy yet again over this. I don't think that portraying Alexander as a man who loved another man is "shoving" anything down the public's throat. If people today had studied in school, they'd already know about it. Duhhh! Most people don't even know who Alexander the Great was. Prolly think he's a Smackdown Wrestler :-/ (And purely from a droolworthy standpoint.....Jared Leto plays Hephaestion) Read Mary Renault's The Persian Boy; the story is beautiful.

There's another movie coming out soon called Brokeback Mountain from a short story by Annie Proulx. She wrote The Shipping News. Anyway, it's about two American cowboys in the 60's who fall in love; picture Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal. I guess this will bite the dust too because people just can't accept that love just happens.

Just me rambling after listening to people condemn what they will never even try to understand.....

And this is what makes the world go round....

All throughout recorded history, the so called intelectual elite has deemed itself worthy of editing true history for their own ends.

Just as the 2 gospels, that of "Philip" and "Thomas" were deleted from the bible, ordered distroyed on pain of death, to confirm the 'then' present views of what the Papal Authority deemed true.

Thank the powers that be that a (near) complete set of these scrolls were hidden away in Egypt.... Recently discovered.... YAY...

There are countless of omissions in history... Most are to cover the asses of those that screw up. Others are to hide the truth.

As far as Gay relationships in history are concerned, you had just better trust to your own beliefs and research is you want to really know what happened. There are just too many of "them" out there to buck that system.

Life is great for me... Most of the time... But then I meet people online... Very few are real friends... Many say they are but know nothing of what it means... Some say they are, but are so shallow...
Also, if you are following these critical remarks.....  [message #23041 is a reply to message #23039] Mon, 29 November 2004 22:55 Go to previous messageGo to next message

The last I heard about this one was that they were forced to cut scenes between Alexander and Bagoas (The Persian Boy) because American audiences couldn't/wouldn't deal with them. Maybe I'll wait for the directors cut DVD to see this one.

Now how about the gay subtext in "the Guns of Navarone"?

Pretty much all the macho men wanted each other as a part of the plot!

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0054953/board/nest/9192193 has a mild reference to it.

The director, J. Lee Thompson did several films with Gay underlying plots and/or dialogue.

I am going through my data base of film to compile a short list.

Okay, I finally saw Alexander yesterday and although this is reviving a long dead topic what I have to say is related, so rather than start a new topic I thought I'd hunt this one down.

Firstly I'd like to say "Where is the controversy?"- there was one sex scene in the movie and that was between Alexander and Roxane his wife. Personally I think is quite a disgusting double standard that the love between Hephaistion and Alexander- which was only shown through dialogue, subtext and the occasional bit of intimacy such as a kiss or hug- has provoked so much more of a reaction than the fact that Alexander and Roxane are shown having sex- including Roxane being virtually naked for an entire scene with her breasts in full view! If you are going to get on your moral high horse about sex then the controversy should be about what was shown, not about what wasn't.

I did miss the first 10-15 minutes of the film so it is possible there was a scene I missed that did involve gay sex, but as far as I can tell the start of the movie only had Alexander as a 13 year old boy, so I seriously doubt that an early teen like that would be shown engaging in sex! Perhaps if Young Alexander and Young Hephaistion were shown participating in sexual acts together then I could understand some of the outrage people have shown towards the movie, but when the only sex in the movie is heterosexual really it is quite sad.

As a movie I think it wasn't superb, but it is definitely about as under-rated as The Passion is over-rated. Personally I think it was a good summary of the life of Alexander for those that know little about him, but it isn't really anything startlingly groundbreaking for those that know Alexander's history already. The movie began to hint at the philosophy behind Alexander's dreams of conquest without really exploring it in depth, it had a very undecided air to it about the merits of Alexander yet it didn't give the audience enough information to draw their own conclusions either. So it isn't a great movie, no; I think among some gay groups it is deified more than it deserves simply because it DOES feature a gay romance. But it is undeserving of the critiques it has been receiving. It is interesting to note though how successful it is outside America, though. I think it is quite a strong confirmation of my theory that Bush won the 2004 election because of homophobia and the gay marriage issue.
